My New Computer

Good computer for the price. The AMD 64 3500+ is a solid performing processor which will eat thorough anything currently on the market.

But a computer is only as good as it's weakest link and while the CPU is strong the comp only comes with 512mb of RAM and intergrated graphics.

By upgrading your RAM and getting a new budget 8 series Geforce GPU you would have a very mean computer there.

It depends on what you want to do with it of course. If you don't play games or do anything else graphically intensive then the GPU is of little use but you will see huge performance gains with a RAM upgrade all the same.

Tempting, I imagine I might look into a RAM upgrade after I move. All I really do is fuck around on message boards, waiting for my latest emule acquisition to finish.

What I'm really excited about is now I have a DVD burner and I can finally burn the 2nd season of Starblazers and the Bigfoot episodes of Six Million Dollar Man.

I'm considering turning some DVD player into R2 so I can just buy the R2 Six Million Dollar Man DVDs. I don't know.

He's right about the RAM, you know. It's not even the amount, really, it's the quality. I dropped from 2GB of PC2700 to 1GB of PC3200 and I'm amazed at the difference in speed and stability. For what it's worth...

Definitely at least double the RAM when you have the chance. If you're not a gaming enthusiast or a graphic artist, you can probably get by with the integrated video...but I'd still throw a real card in there at some point.

The rest looks good, though I have to wonder about some of the pre-installed software. You could probably get rid of a lot of that, or at least disable much of it from starting up on boot. Ack.

Nice monitor. Enjoy.

gah, pre-built comcrap.

Alright,

The Athalon 64 3500 is a good processor, it'll hold up well, just get a better heatsink then the stock POS they put on it.

Hard drive is good, but get more RAM as soon as you can. with XP and a lot of the newer programs out now, 512 just doesn't cut it.

Now doing anything graphics intensive is going to push the integrated video, I would suggest getting a card to put in there since most decent ones have dropped in price recently.

The programs it comes with are pretty decent. I would get rid of some of them though.

You'll really love that 56K modem *snicker*

Another point on the RAM issue is that if you're a giant mp3 fanatic and your library is over 1000 songs, opening any program with that sized playlist will immediately lag your computer back to the stone age.

ouch.

So what do you plan on doing with this comp? Work, Gaming, Home stuff, Video creation and burning?

If we know, we can help you with what you should upgrade more.

I like to use it as a surface to put more papers and junk on.

actually, I like to fuck around on message boards, I make all sorts of wierd lists of things. Not so much work stuff, and I won't be gaming on it at all. I will be using it to upload illegally and burn DVDs of my illegally uploaded material, such as The Six Million Dollar Man and maybe some Three Stooges. But I will not be watching those DVDs on the computer. I have been listening to lots of music, but that will end in a few months.

haHAHA THE SURFACE OF MY DESK IS HUGE!!! I CAN FIT BOTH MONITORS, BOTHE TOWERS, AND THE SPEAKERS AND CABLE MODEM ALL ON THE TOP OF MY DESK HAHAHAHAH SO I'M SEETINNING IT UP NOW WHILE I WATCH CONAN O'BRIEN JOKE ABOUT EPISODE ONE BECAUSE IT JUST CAME OUT BUT HTYE AREN'T SPOILING IT EXCEPT THAT THE SPECIAL EFFECTS WERE GOOD.

I like to stack junk on top of my computer too , CD's , magazines, junk mail,,,

I added a board on top of the two towers so I can pile even more junk on top.
