Thanks to Turner Classic Movie, a lot of the old best picture winners are on in February, I am going to post and update this and comment on the new ones I see. I encourage others to chime in Best Picture winners.

95: aahhh, Braveheart - "FREEEEE-DOMMMMMM"
96: An English Patient - Missing that one on purpose I could fully understand.

64: My Fair Lady - Darth, you never watched My Fair Lady?!? It's a freaking musical, go and get it!

Nahh, Since 1997 I have seen every picture nominated for best picture, including such awful movies as Thin Red Line and this year's Atonement.

I even saw Brokeback Mountain which I thought was quite good.

Rob! You're alive!
No honey, Braveheart, not Rob Roy... I know they're both Scottish and all, but there *is* a difference (Gibson, for example, didn't become a Jedi)

:y_grin:

Rob Roy was AWFUL!!!!!! I was trying to decide which to see at the time they were in the movie and chose that stink bomb.

You can kill his kids, burn his down and rape his wife, that is all OK, but besmirch his honour? Watch out!!!! He's gunning for you.

Freeeedooommmmm!!!!

If William Wallace were here, he'd surely shoot fireballs from his eyes and lightning bolts from his arse.

He killed fifty men, fifty if he killed one.

He cut through them like... Moses and the Red Sea.

As long as I live, no Scot is a slave. As long as I live, SCOTLAND IS FREE!

The nobles respect you. The commoners respect you. I respect you. And if you'd just show the slightest bit of leadership, they'd all follow you.

The Life of Emile Zola - 1937

It was not called best picture back then, it was awarded "Outstanding Production"

Very enjoyable film. For a while, I had a hard figuring out the time period. About a famous writer who criticized the hell out of French government in the later half of the 19th century. A true troll of there ever was one. Most of his writings can be read for free at the e-book bibliophile project. Interesting historical note, the movie was released in 1937, Emile Zola was on trial for defending a Jewish army guy accused of espionage. He was accused solely because he was Jewish.

This movie beat out the following films which were also nominated:

The Awful Truth
Captains Courageous
Dead End
The Good Earth
In Old Chicago
Lost Horizon
One Hundred Men and a Girl
Stage Door
A Star is Born

The Broadway Melody - 1928-1929

Outstanding Production.

This was the actual first talkie movie. The Jazz Singer is widely credited, however, the jazz singer was just music played.

Movie about two sisters from Podunk moving to NYC. One girl has a chance to sleep her way to the top, however, she falls for his sister's main squeeze. The sister lets her beau go with her sister to save her sister from the sleazy producer.

There were no nominations. Only the winners were announced, however, here are the movies the academy considered for top honours:

Alibi
In Old Arizona
Hollywood Revue
The Patriot

Battleground
The Heiress
A Letter to Three Wives
Twelve O'Clock High

Other nominations:

Arrowsmith
