NBA suspends Draymond Green indefinitely, cites 'repeated history'

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green has been suspended indefinitely by the NBA for striking Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkic in the face during Tuesday night's game, the league announced Wednesday. Green received a flagrant foul for striking and was subsequently ejected for the third time this season. According to the NBA's release, the indefinite suspension "takes into account Green's repeated history of unsportsmanlike acts." The league said the penalty handed down by operations chief Joe Dumars begins immediately. This is already Green's second suspension this season. "He will be required to meet certain league and team conditions before he returns to play," the NBA said. Green will be docked $153,941 per game if his suspension is fewer than 20 games and $202,922 per game if more than 20 games. Green's three ejections are tied for his most in a season.

His first came after he picked up two technical fouls against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Nov. 11.

His second occurred against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Nov. 14 when he put Rudy Gobert in a headlock. The NBA suspended Green for five games after the latter incident, with the league citing Green's history as a repeat offender for the length of the suspension.

Green was ejected with 8:23 left in the third quarter Tuesday after he swung and hit Nurkić in the head while defending him. At first, while Green's back was turned to Nurkić, he repeatedly held Nurkić off him. Eventually, Green turned and hit Nurkić in the head with his hand. Officials deemed the foul a flagrant 2 after a video review.

The Warriors have made it very clear to Green that they need him on the floor. That need is greater now than ever, as Golden State sits at 10-13 with two of its most important players, Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins, struggling.

Warriors' focus on doing 'right things' to help Green, not punishment

The Golden State Warriors held a team meeting Wednesday to discuss Draymond Green's indefinite suspension and the actions and behavior that led to it. It was an honest and emotional conversation. But at the root of each message shared was the commitment to Green, as a player and person.

Curry said that the conversation was about "holding each other accountable -- holding Draymond accountable -- to what's been going on and what needs to change." Warriors coach Steve Kerr said that Green's latest altercation -- swiping Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkic in the face in what Green said was an attempt to sell a foul call -- was concerning because it was the fourth incident in the past year in which he acted out violently. These acts weren't the same as his past ejections that were caused by yelling at an official or some other demonstrative antics during a game. "The one who choked Rudy [Golbert], the one who took a wild flail at Jusuf, the one who punched Jordan [Poole] last year -- that's the guy who needs to change," Kerr said. "This is not just about an outburst on the court. It's about his life. It's about someone who I believe in, someone I have known for decades, who I love for his loyalty."

Green will remain with the team throughout his suspension, though he's not expected to be there every day. Dunleavy said it would be more beneficial for Green to stay connected to the group than "jettisoning the guy off somewhere." Green was not with the team in Los Angeles on Thursday and will be away for a least a few days. "We've got to give it a few days," Kerr said. "I think the team needs a little space. I think Draymond needs a little space. Draymond will do what he feels right and then move forward."

Draymond Green ejected again for flagrant 2 on Jusuf Nurkic

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green was ejected from Tuesday night's 119-116 loss to the Phoenix Suns after receiving a flagrant foul 2 for hitting Jusuf Nurkic in the head. The ejection is his third of the season, and he now will have to await a league review for the possibility of another suspension. Green was ejected with 8:23 left in the third quarter after he swung and hit Nurkic in the head while defending him. At first, while Green's back was turned to Nurkic, he repeatedly held Nurkic off him. Eventually, Green turned and hit Nurkic in the head with his hand. LeBron James enlisted his most famous friends like Jay-Z, Beyonce and Anthony Davis to celebrate his birthday in Los Angeles on Monday ... but there was one guy on the guest list who was a bit of a surprise -- suspended Warriors star Draymond Green. The King -- whose special day was on Dec. 30 -- hosted his buds at Hyde Sunset for his 39th trip around the sun and there appeared to be a fun theme for the night, as A.D. and Draymond showed up in flashy outfits. Green -- who hasn't played since his Dec. 12 incident with Phoenix Suns center Jusef Nurkic appeared to be in great spirits as he entered the venue alongside Davis, who was rocking an iconic 'fro. Of course, Draymond is getting help during his time away from the team ... with reports saying he is seeking counseling before suiting up for the Dubs again. Other big names in attendance included Don Cheadle, 2 Chainz and Bronny James ... so we're sure it was a night to remember.

Sources: Draymond Green to rejoin Warriors on Sun. after reinstatement

The NBA reinstated Draymond Green on Saturday from a suspension that lasted 12 games, and sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski that the Golden State Warriors forward is expected to need approximately a week of ramp-up before returning to game action. Green will return to the Warriors' practice facility Sunday after being away from the team while serving the suspension, sources said.

The NBA announced an indefinite ban for Green on Dec. 13, one day after he struck center Jusuf Nurkic during a game against the Phoenix Suns. "Green completed steps that demonstrated his commitment to conforming his conduct to standards expected of NBA players," the league said in a statement. "He has engaged in meetings with a counselor and has met jointly on multiple occasions with representatives of the NBA, the Warriors and the National Basketball Players Association, both of which will continue throughout the season."

The Warriors have gone 7-5 during Green's 12 games away from the team. Overall, Golden State is 10-10 this season when Green hasn't been available (due to injury or suspension) and is 7-8 in his 15 games played.

Sources: Draymond Green planning to return vs. Grizzlies

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green is planning to make his return against the Memphis Grizzlies on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Green isn't listed on the team's injury report for Monday's game. Green missed 12 games while serving an indefinite suspension that began Dec. 13, and four more while he ramped up after his reinstatement Jan. 7. The Warriors went 8-8 during that span. After spending his entire suspension away from the team, Green returned to the Warriors' facilities last Sunday. Green, who was suspended after striking Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkic, has spent the week in weightlifting sessions, practicing and scrimmaging to get his in-game conditioning back. Green went on Golden State's current four-game road trip with hopes of being cleared to play.

Draymond Green's return doesn't spark Warriors in loss to Grizzlies

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green made his return Monday from his indefinite suspension but he wasn't able to lift the Warriors past a depleted Memphis Grizzlies team, falling 116-107. Green, whose absence spanned 16 games, came off the bench in the hopes of preserving some of the momentum the Warriors starting lineup had built over the past two games without him. As Green checked in at 6:32 of the first quarter, boos from the Memphis crowd rained down on him. The crowd continued to heckle him each time he touched the ball. Green finished with seven points on 2-of-4 shooting, including two 3-pointers, seven rebounds, four assists and one steal in 23 minutes.

Draymond Green says suspension allowed Warriors to 'explore,' sparked run

The Golden State Warriors are finding some momentum. At 26-25, they are above .500 for the first time since Dec. 23. They have won five games in a row, matching their longest streak of the season. They've also won three straight road games by at least 20 points for the second time in franchise history. Warriors guard Stephen Curry is the first to admit that the team hasn't "done anything yet," as it is just 1½ games above the Utah Jazz whom the Warriors beat 129-107 on Monday night -- for the 10th seed in the Western Conference. However, pieces of the puzzle are starting to come together. The Warriors have remained optimistic throughout their turbulent season, but this is the first time since their 6-1 start that there is something for Golden State to show for it.

Green's suspension thrust third-year forward Johathan Kurninga into the starting lineup, a position he hasn't relinquished since. That, according to Green, has been the biggest game-changer. "Since then, JK has taken off, and that has set the stage for this team," Green said. "Bona fide No. 2 option on our team. Now, you are able to figure out different things that we can go to." After posting 14 points against the Jazz on Monday, Kuminga has scored in double figures for a career-high 31 consecutive games. He was one of eight Warriors to finish in double-digit scoring, tied for their most in a game this season.

Stephen Curry 'lets out steam,' lifts Dubs after Green tossed

Since Draymond Green returned from his indefinite suspension in January, the Golden State Warriors have applauded the way he has maintained his fire while managing not to cross the line. He would bark at officials and play with physicality but did so without taking it too far. Until Wednesday night. Green was ejected less than four minutes into the Warriors' eventual 101-93 over the Orlando Magic.

He had been chirping at official Ray Acosta after being called for his first personal foul. A few plays later, after Stephen Curry was called for a shooting foul, Green approached Acosta and began yelling at him. Acosta issued a technical foul, and when Green didn't stop, Acosta gave him another, ending his night at the 8:24 mark of the first quarter.

It was Green's career-high fourth ejection of the season. He is the first player to be ejected at least four times in a season since Kevin Durant was tossed five times in 2017-18, according to ESPN Stats & Information. It also marked the second time Green was ejected in the first quarter this season. According to ESPN Stats & Information, he is the only player with multiple first-quarter ejections in a season over the past 20 campaigns.
