New Doctor Who.

Blindgroping

U mad 'bro?
I have a friend that is completely thrilled that they are doing Doctor Who again.
So, it's on Bravo right now so I watched the first episode.
Ok, they got Billie Piper to be the Who girl. My, age hasn't been great to her.

But anyway, I thought it would have improved with it being the 2000s.
Nope. Silly plot, (a Consciousness is controlling the Plastic (Maniquins) of the world (england) to take over the world. Dr.Who has a vile of Anti-Plastic that saves the day.
And horriblely, super cheesy ~BAD~ special effects.
Oh God.
Please.
No.

Pilot ep. Better SFX than the old program. ;)

I liked it, but then I'm a Who nut going on 25 years now.

"Rose" isn't the best ep, no. It gets better as the series goes on...trust me. You will enjoy yourself.

Start with the new series, if you like that, and want more, check out the tom baker stories, genisis of the daleks would be a good one to sample.

Definitely start with Tom Baker, yes. The 4th Doctor is the quintessential Doctor.

Work back to the Jon Pertwee stories. I confess to not having seen much of the 1st and 2nd Doctor stories, though the ones I have seen I generally liked.

Peter Davison, the 5th Doctor, has many good eps and many stinkers. Avoid the 6th Doctor, Colin Baker, at all costs. Not only do the eps suck, that period had serious production problems and it shows in the episodes.

7th Doctor? I can't speak for him...perhaps those who actually saw most of the eps can.

Go here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/

and you can find a place to watch short clips of eps from all versions of the program. You need Real Player to do it, but it's worth it.

7th Doctor doesnt start well, hes played by a childrens television entertainer famous for his pratfalls, and gurning, and there was plenty of that to be seen in the first few episodes, enough to have put me off watching, I returned when the daleks did, only to find a serious dark doctor, heaping holesale destruction on his enemies, wiping out not only vast armies of daleks and cybermen, but also their homeworlds.

Then just as it was getting good and people were coming back to it, it was gone, never to return until one abortive american pilot, and then the show we have now.

I liked "Rose" ok. Christopher Eccleston is a GREAT choice for The Doctor. Too bad he only signed on for one season.

Yeah, the SFX were bad, and yeah the storyline was corny. But that's Doctor Who, man!

Thank goodness they kept the CLASSIC opening theme and the TARDIS sound effects.

BTW, you know you're a hopeless sci-fi geek when you know what T.A.R.D.I.S. stands for. ;)

Did you not watch the second episode as well?

Nope, hasn't aired in the US yet.

Which is the second episode?? They alternately describe the sun exploding episode and the dead returning episode as "on the next Doctor Who". So which is the proper second episode?

And what does the 2nd episode have to do with my comments??

They showed the second episode directly after Rose in the States, is my understanding. It's the one with the "sun exploding".

I also here they have been editing a few minutes out of each episode to show adverts, which involves the cuting out of most of the jokes.

Oh, yeah, they did. My TiVO didn't catch it, because it thinks all the episodes are re-runs, because they have a 2005 air date. I switched it to "record first run and repeats" and the 2nd episode was recorded last night. So I'll have 2 to watch this weekend. I very much look forward to it!

Dr. Who is something that I've been wanting to get into. I've only watched a few eps as a kid and remember loving them... and I have all the 1980s Doctor Who comic books... Marvel Premiere, and the limited series...

BTW Sardy, I forgot to say thanks for this comment...you BASTARD! My "collector's OCD" kicked in, and now I simply must own all the Marvel Comics Doctor Who issues!! :rwmad:

;)

Saw the second episode this afternoon, and it was GREAT! I'll be watching #3 tonight and let you know what I think. So far, so good!!

You'll like #3 even better.

Other good ones I think you'll appreciate are "Father's Day" (#7), "Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances" (#9 & 10), and the two part season finale "Bad Wolf" and "The Parting Of The Ways." You might like #6 as well.

A few bumps in the season...the episodes 4&5 didn't grab me, nor episode 8...though it ties into the finale.

I watched #3, "The Unquiet Dead" last night. Another good episode. Though, truth be told, I liked #2 a smidge better.

I continue to be impressed by Christopher Eccleston's portrayal of The Doctor. He's got that child-like, mischevious, "wink-wink" quality The Doctor should have, but he also has the gravitas to pull off the more serious scenes. I'm impressed with the way he can turn from silly to deadly serious and back to silly at the drop of a hat.

I thought the actor playing Charles Dickens was a bit over the top, but nonetheless the episode was very good.

And, I've gotta say, I've come to realize that Doctor Who has the best theme music in television, bar none. The way the music starts with that freaky whatever it is, then the thumping baseline...it's the shit, and I re-wind it sometimes just to hear the theme music. Thank God they didn't change it!

I look forward to the rest of the season, particulary the episodes that CU liked.
