No more American flags in American schools?

On the flag as apparel.

The US Flag Code gives us this advice on "flag" apparel:

Yeah, but is that referring strictly to purpose-made flags, or to any and all images of the flag?

Actually, any and all "flag as clothing" patterns, whether originally a flag or made as shirts, shorts, etc. The Flag Code basically prohibits such casual "denigrations" of the image; "flag" shirts, pants, etc, are what the authors of the Code had in mind when writing that section. This is why the fashion for wearing "flag" clothing is fairly recent; the Flag Code is essentially not respected outside of ceremony these days.

It actually elaborates more on the clothing elements of use of the flag pattern further with respect to uniforms etc, in addition to use as casual clothing or furniture accessories:
No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.
To review the full section, it is very specific on draping the flag-pattern:
It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker's desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.
While on the topic, we should also note that:
The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever.
This article of the Code is also widely ignored.
