Of course insurance companies were acting in their best interest. The problem is that we have a for-profit healthcare system in the US. We need to get on board with the rest of the developed world and create a socialized system. No more half measures.
You're right. No more half measures. Get the government entirely out of health insurance. Entirely out.
Bring back interstate competition, remove subsidies, so that insurers have to compete for customers. That will lower premiums, lower deductibles, and improve coverage and quality.
Government favoritism never improved any industry, and it never will.
