overclocking your DVD burner

You use unofficial firmware updates to make the drive go faster than spec. Many people do this, but I don't really know much about it, and apparently there's a risk of ruining the hardware.

I say its a bad idea, just by a faster drive. If the overclocked drive burns bad disk you are losing not gaining.

we have 4 computers so if one is busy I can use another one.

Third-party firmware packages are dicey at best. Unless the burner is trash anyway, I wouldn't bother.

Newer, faster burners are pretty damned cheap these days.

Is there a risk for the rest of the machine or just the burner? b/c if it kills the burner I'll just get a new, faster one. This POS won't burn - disks at any reasonable speed...
