PARISH 2024 SUMMER OLYMPICS

IOC lauds Paris for Olympic preparation ahead of 2024 Games
While new Olympic venues are on track, French auditors have flagged to parliament that they're still unable to say how much the games will cost in total and what their final impact will be on public finances, once security and other expenses are factored in. Some 8.8 billion euros ($9.4 billion) are budgeted for Olympic construction and the Paris organizing committee, with more than a third of that from public coffers.

Team USA loses OT thriller to Canada in World Cup bronze-medal game

An NBA game broke out at the FIBA World Cup on Sunday, with Team USA and Team Canada falling into the high-octane, free-flowing, star vs. star game they are so comfortable with in a fun goodbye to the league-obsessed Filipinos. Shai Gilgeous played his superstar role, scoring seven of his 31 points to start overtime and eventually power Canada's 127-118 victory to claim the bronze medal. Canada also got a statement game, loudly and unexpectedly, from Dil;on Btooks, who scored 39 points as part of a shooting masterpiece. The U.S. failed to medal in its second consecutive World Cup, the first time that has happened since 1970. Including the 2019 World Cup and the 2021 Olympics, where Team USA won gold, the Americans have now lost seven times. The roster this summer that focused on quickness and versatility has simply proved ineffective

Several players who were part of the 2021 gold-medal-winning team in Tokyo who didn't play in the FIBA World Cup this summer, including Jayson Tatum, Devin Booker and two-time gold medalist Draymond Green, are also candidates to return, sources told ESPN. The U.S. has won the past four Olympic golds in basketball but just two of the past six World Cups.

Chris Paul, won Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012. Kevin Durant has won three Olympic golds and would be a candidate to play again. James, 38, won a bronze in 2004 and golds in 2008 and 2012. Davis won gold in 2012 and was part of the World Cup winner when he last played for Team USA in 2014.

Team USA tops FIBA men's world ranking, overtaking Spain
USA Basketball is back atop the FIBA men's world rankings, even after failing to medal at the World Cup. Spain had overtaken the U.S. in November 2022, ending a 12-year run in the top spot for the Americans.

Joel Embiid to represent Team USA at 2024 Paris Olympics

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embid, the NBA's reigning MVP, has committed to play for Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Embiid informed Team USA executive director Grant Hill of his decision Thursday morning, sources said, just days after the two quietly met for close to an hour in Fort Collins, Colorado, where the Sixers are holding training camp. Embiid, who was born in Cameroon and holds both French and American citizenship, has been at the center of an intense recruiting battle over which country he will represent at the Olympics. Embiid told reporters Monday at media day he was genuinely torn between the three options. Adding the 7-foot Embiid addresses the Americans' biggest weaknesses at this year's World Cup: size and defense. The U.S. lost three of its final four games in Manila, allowing 117 points per game in the losses. France, the reigning Olympic silver medalist, had hoped to convince Embiid to play for its side as it hosts the 2024 Games. The French finished 18th at this year's World Cup but have an automatic berth for the Olympics as the host nation. Cameroon has yet to qualify for the Games. Embiid is a six-time All-Star and three-time All-Defensive team selection. Adding the 7-foot Embiid addresses the Americans' biggest weaknesses at this year's World Cup: size and defense.
