I believe you mean Venetians. There wasn't too much of an Italian national consciousness at the time, and the Venetians certainly regarded themselves as distinct.

On a side note, I got wasted on cheap wine on the site of the Venetian fortifications from Morosini's attack in 1687. Amazing view.
