You know, I've heard some talk about proxies.
Para and darth talking about how to get around thier IP bans and such.
I don't know how to do this.
Anyone want to give me a rundown on it?
Proxy for Dummies like.
This is a good forum for this sort of thing, so here we go:
Basically, when you go to a site, the site admin is capable of viewing the IPs of visitors...and in case someone doesn't know: just like your house has an assigned address, so does your computer based upon the number given by your service provider. Thus you have an IP that is a series of numbers ranging up to 255 in four blocks, like this: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
If you're IP banned (or in me and my wife's case at EI...our entire ISP is banned because we seriously fucked that place up) from a site or you'd rather the admin didn't know your IP, then you can surf through a proxy. The lazy way is to find a proxy website like
www.proxylord.com and do it that way. Different proxy websites are...well...different. Some will allow you to surf but not post. Some will allow only a certain amount of surfing per day.
Another way is to use software to manages proxies. I understand that IE, for example, allows for surfing through proxies, but I don't use IE at all, so I'll let someone else chime in on that. Firefox has an add-on called "proxy bar" or something like that which will allow you to use proxies and turn it on or off as you want.
Another form of software is stuff you can download and use while using whatever browser you choose. Steganos Anonym is the best IMO. I got it through bittorrent...it ain't hard to find, and it's easy to use.
Now...what's the function of proxies? Ok, as I said, the site admin can see your IP. If you don't want that, then you have to mask yourself. A proxy is another server that, for whatever reason, allows you to netsurf through them and the mean ol' site admin will think you're from that proxy server instead of where you really are.
Some servers do this on purpose. College servers sometimes do this for those with accounts there. Most proxies are just servers that aren't configured correctly and thus you can use them...until the server admin notices the higher traffic and fixes things. I used a proxy from Ethiopia for several months...didn't even know they had computers in Eithiopia, but there you are.
As far as I've been able to find out, there are three types of proxies:
- A transparent proxy. The fastest. This one will allow you to surf through them, and the site admin will see the proxy's IP,
but his admin software will also note that it's a proxy and show your real IP.
- An anonymous proxy. Slightly slower. Will show up as a proxy but won't narc out your real IP.
- Elite proxy. Slowest, but most secure. Won't even show up as a proxy.
Getting them: I don't recommend hunting for proxies yourself with proxy hunting software, because your ISP might frown on that sort of thing. There are ample lists of them on the net...Google is your friend. A good site is
www.samair.ru/proxy
Hope that helps.
ETA: you want proxies that operate on port 80. That's html.
