Sherlock series 4

It was okay.

I never warmed to Mary or really bought her and John as a couple, but I guess some people were sad when the thing happened?

What was the weird "go to Hell, Sherlock" bit after the titles about?

I reckon it was "go to hell" as in "this'll be really difficult", not a literal meaning. Just to throw us off.

I didn't warm to Mary either. I don't think she's the best actress in the world and not at all convincing as some kind of super agent. She's too meek.

I also always found it weird that she was a Martin Freeman's actual wife, because you can only assume that's how she got the job. And it was even weirder in this episode with John seemingly having an affair and asking "is it too early for a divorce" knowing that they've broken up in real life.

Other than that I did like the episode. Stylish and fun as ever. And it was nice to have a standalone-ish investigation at the beginning, as I prefer those to the grand Moriarty stories that always feel like they're leading up to a Dalek invasion.

Oh my god, they killed Mary!

I don't know what's going on most of the time when I watch this show.

They aren't actually married apparently, but yeah. That scene on the plane where she was talking in a bad American accent for some reason was an example of why I'm glad she's dead (unless they do some stupid twist that she's alive.) I thought the brief flirting between Watson and the Scottish Woman was more convincing than Watson/Mary.

Much better than last week's. Toby Jones is a great actor so that helped! (The Savile stuff nearly got distracting though.) It felt better directed and better paced than last week's, which was choppy, probably because it was more of a traditional Sherlock episode than a Jason Bourne knock-off (without the budget to make a Jason Bourne knock-off.)

The cliffhanger's a bit silly because we all know Watson isn't going to be shot in the face.

Ghost Mary was really annoying and I felt the allusions to Jimmy saville were too strong and obvious, but other than that I really liked it.

They're getting more and more adventurous and inventive with how it's filmed and it's always exciting to see what they'll do next. I can't see anyone managing to get bored by it.

Did anyone notice that therapist was two other people? I wondered early on why she seemed to be made up to look old, but I only realised she was the fake daughter when it was revealed a fake daughter existed. And I didn't pick up on her being John's affair at all.

Best line: "Do you have any idea how fast you were driving?" "No, of course not! I was on the phone!"

I thought her grey hair looked fake but didn't realise they were all the same actress.

It's interesting that Americans who have watched it, and don't know who Jimmy Savile was, are saying the villain was an "obvious Donald Trump stand-in."

It's quite appropriate really that what was probably the last ever episode of Sherlock was the most Sherlock episode of Sherlock to ever Sherlock?

Like it had the things that were good about it. The acting was topnotch from all the regulars (even down to the two minute Molly appearance.) I thought the Euros actress did a good job with a...challenging character. It looked movie quality at times. Some clever funny lines. Things like the drone grenade and hijacking the fishing boat were a bit silly but in a very entertaining way that fit the tone of the show. Moriarty's campy entrance reminded me why he was so entertaining back when he was alive.

BUT that brings me to what I've always thought is the problem with Sherlock: they write themselves into a corner and have to cheat to get out. After Moriarty killed himself they obviously struggled to come up with a villain as compelling so they kept having him return as a memory palace ghost or a tape recording or whatever. In Euros they tried to create a character who would be a more memorable and powerful villain than Moriarty but to do that they had to give her literal super powers. I know Sherlock's super deduction thing is basically a super power but at least they show his thought process when he does it. With Euros they just said "oh, she can brainwash people by talking to them" and didn't ever aatually show her doing that. Because nobody can actually do that in real life (Derren Brown doesn't count.) So she ended up being literally a Doctor Who villain who can brainwash an entire super secure prison just by looking at people.

And to make it all work Mycroft had to be turned into an idiot who let super criminal Moriarty talk to his super powered sister UNMONITORED for five minutes even though he knew exactly what she could do. And I'm sturggling to see what the point of Moriarty working with her/being brainwashed by her really was other than to explain how she got footage of him to play for the "Miss me?" thing.

I liked the idea of Sherlock reaching out to the mentally the mentally ill person in the end instead of defeating her, but it was really really rushed. She seemed perfectly competent for the whole episode until the very end where she's sitting in an attic rocking back and forth.

Mary makes a speech about how Sherlock and Watson are legendary heroes which made me wish we'd seen less of the convoluted personal revenge stories and more of the actual cases that supposedly made them legends but were always shown in quick montages.

The more I think about it, the more stupid stuff I remember.

Like, Sherlock's friend (not a four sibling like I initially thought) was murdered by Euros when they were kids? Fine. They say they never found the boy's body. Fine, Euros is a super genius so she must have killed him in some super genius way. So thirty years later she's going to kill Watson in the same way and he finds the bones of the previous murdered friend. And it turns out Watson is...in a well on Sherlock's family's lands.

So how the fuck did they never find the boy's body? SURELY the well would have been the very first place they'd have looked (especiall since Mycroft somehow knew that the friend was drowned.)

Yeah, I kept thinking about how stupid the plot was the whole time.

How many wells could Timmy be trapped in? IF YOU HAVE AN OPEN WELL AND A MISSING KID YOU WILL DEFINITELY LOOK IN THE FUCKING WELL.

And how did a seven year old girl manage to chain a boy to the bottom of a well anyway.

Also Moffat's still sexist as fuck so that's nice: http://ew.com/tv/2017/01/16/sherlock-showrunner-season-4-finale/

She gets over it! Surely at a certain point you have to figure out that after Sherlock escapes tells her, “I’m really sorry about that, it was a code, I thought your flat was about to blow up.” And she says, “Oh well that’s okay then, you bastard.” And then they go back to normal, that’s what people do. I can’t see why you’d have to play that out. She forgives him, of course, and our newly grown-up Sherlock is more careful with her feelings in the future. In the end of that scene, she’s a bit wounded by it all, but he’s absolutely devastated. He smashes up the coffin, he’s in pieces, he’s more upset than she is, and that’s a huge step in Sherlock’s development. The question is: Did Sherlock survive that scene? She probably had a drink and went and shagged someone, I dunno. Molly was fine.

Basically her character only existed to be treated like shit by Sherlock for years for his own character development...but no point showing how she feels about it, she was fine I guess!

I will just pretend Sherlock meant it when he said he loves her, and they go out to dinner and STUFF.
