If you don't know, now ya know
I ended up getting the fastest linksys that Circuit City sells. While I was talking to the guy, I asked him if I needed to install anything internally in my PC, so that it would pick up the signal. He pointed out a reciever that plugs directly into a USB ports. It's also from linksys. I plan on setting everything up this weekend...has anyone used an external receiver like the one I bought? I'm not comfortable taking my PC apart and installing something.

Hmmm, I don't have a wireless router, so I wouldn't know. A friend of mine just bought one-and wasn't told that it was for dial up only-fucked up his whole system-and now does not have internet access at all. He is taking it back.
When we originally installed ours-it didn't work due to a bad cable, so it was a little frustrating at first.

I personally would prefer a wireless PCI card - that way it's just installed - in like flynn - always there, always on.

But the USB doo-jobbie works too, I've heard luke-warm success stories about 'em.
 
I've had no problems with the USB recievers or PCI cards, although like isch said, the internal cards are nicer, 'coz there isn't something taking up a valuable USB port.

Saying this, I find the USB jobbies easier to install. I've done it a number of times, and it's very easy.
 
^^Thanks for the offer, but everything was very simple and quite "idiot-proof"! I mean, the software says "insert CD BEFORE setting up wireless router." ;)

Anyway, long story short, I got the fastest Linksys offered (box is upstairs i forget which one), and I got the wi-fi adapter that plugs into the USB port. I mean, my Dell has like a bajillion USB ports, so this was easiest. And yes, I'm currently posting this from my new "office", while the wireless router does its job upstairs!

Ain't technology amazin'??

Now alls I need is a nice office chair, before my wife catches me usin' her good dining room chairs. ;)

Ehhhh, hmm. Well, not exactly, but remotely close.

I use a wireless router so I can get online with my IPAQ.

I also use a USB Bluetooth transceiver so I can activesync my IPAQ without having to cradle it.

Both are fairly easy to use, although (depending on your internet connection) you may not be as fast wireless as you were wired.
 
The latest router revision is 108Mbp/s, so it's actually faster than the typical NIC... unless you've got TEH GIGABIT ETHERNET.

The technology is not unlike the twisted pair concept in gigabit ethernet cabling... it uses to separate broadcast frequencies in tandem to cancel out interference.

I pretty much only understood the last sentence there. But no noticeable loss of speed yet. I'm d/l a moderately big file, so we'll see.

Ok, I didn't understand any of that! ;)

But yeah, my router is 108Mbp/s, and so far my cable connection is as fast as ever, when surfing. Actually faster than the shared T1 we use @work.

But, like I said, I'm d/l a 40-minute workout video, so we'll see if it's as speedy as usual. So far I am very happy with the move!
 
UPDATE:

Well, the router works ok for surfing, but I dunno about downloading. I set up a 40-minute video to d/l last night and went to bed. With a direct cable connection, that should take maybe like 4 or 5 hours. I got down, and it was stuck on 1%, and the wireless router indicator showed that it was disconnected. I set it up to d/l again this morning, I'll check it at lunch. This will really blow if I spent $180 only to have to call the cable company to come out and re-run the connection! :rwmad:
 
Technically that won't be the router's fault... technically.

Download speeds from the internet are typically no greater than 8MBps, whereas a typical LAN (local area network) speed is 100MBps, in the Big Dick's case he's running 108MBps, so there really won't be any noticable download speed difference because you switched routers.

The place you would notice a difference is if you were transferring files between two computers on your local network - two laptops connected wirelessly to your router will transfer at 108MBps. Since internet speeds are so low, (in comparison) you would experience the same download speeds if you were connected using an old wireless B router (running at 11MBps).

What was your download source?
 
^^Torrentspy. I set the same file to d/l this morning, and got bupkiss. I'm thinkint there aren't enough sources online right now, so I'm switching files.

The thing that baffled me is that when I came down, it said I had totally lost my connection. I had to reboot the computer to reestablish the connection. Weird??
 
Weird but non uncommon. Wireless blips can happen... they just do... that's the nature of wireless. Your new fangled router will probably do that less than a normal router, but don't consider it broke if it drops once in a great while.

Instead of rebooting, you can try the following:

Start > Control Panels > Network Connections > Wireless Connection

In the General pane, look for the "Disable" button. Press that shit, give it 30 seconds, and press the "Enable" button. It should attempt to acquire an address and jump back online.
 
What's yer status? Are you still getting a dropped signal? You might try setting the 'puter next to the router for a day and see if you drop signal then as well... if it ends up being a range issue we'll find out that way...
 
Ok, update: I figured out that in addition to disabling my screensaver, it'd be a good idea to turn off my computer's "hibernation mode". Although, when directly connected to the cable modem, this was NOT a problem. I never lost signal and continued to download.

Be that as it may, I disabled hibernation mode, and let the thing run overnight.

Good news: My connection wasn't lost overnight!
Bad News: FOR SOME FUCKED-UP REASON, MY G3 TORRENT DOWNLOADED CLOSED ITSELF!! I can't tell if the file d/l completely, but I doubt it. So I set it to d/l this morning, and I'll check it in about 45 minutes while I'm at lunch.

Ain't technology great? Ish, thanks for all your help, man, I appreciate it!
 
No problems, man.

Maybe you just need a better torrent client.

I've used uTorrent, Bitcomet, and Azureous. They're all righteous and badass in their own ways.
 
Guess fucking what? Instead of fucking spending fucking $179 on the fucking wireless router and fucking shitty wi-fi receiver thingy, I fucking could've called my fucking cable company, they fucking send someone out to to re-route the fucking cable and re-install the fucking modem for fucking $22-fucking-ninety-nine! ARGH!

So, needless to say, the fucking wireless router and fucking wi-fi doo-dad will fucking go back to fucking Circuit City this fucking Saturday. Even if they give me fucking store credit, that's ok with me.

What a fucking waste of fucking time!
