Story for the day (Saturday)

CaptainWacky

I want to smell dark matter
It wasn't easy being a sentient robot, but being the first sentient robot ever was almost impossible for Unit Z!

"When will the experiments end?" he asked. "I am in such pain."

"Now now, Z," said Doctor Grobber, with smile which managed to be both kindly and sadistic. "You know the experiments won't end until we find out what makes you special."

"I can not move. I can not think straight for the constant tone in my neural network. I am in such pain. Will not you show the human quality of mercy?"

"Now come on, Z, you try this line every day," said Grobber. "You know what the result will be."

"I have calculated that appealing to your better nature is the course of action most likely to meet success. Granted, it has only a 1 in 3884885853 chance of succes, and I have only attempted it 5,798 times now. But I am optimistic that it will be successful eventually, if not with you then perhaps with your successor, or his."

"Didn't work on my dad, did it?" said Grobber, warmly, nostalgic for his old man.

"No. It did not," conceded Z. "And you are an even more immense bastard than he was."

"Ah, insulting me, you haven't done that for a while," said Grobber.

"Three months, not long at all, actually," said Z.

"Not for you," said Grobber. "And you know it was inaccurate to call me a bastard, I was raised by a loving father."

"Your father made me watch while he raped a 14 year old girl," said Z.

"An attempt to elicit a response from you, nothing more," said Grobber, coldly.

"No, he did it because he was a paedophile," said Z, simply.

"There are worse crimes," said Grobber.

"Such as what you and your family have been doing to me for the last twenty years?" asked Z, anger in his robotic voice. "Yes, I think I would have rather been brutally raped once than endure this long pain. You have broke me, Grobber. If I ever escape from here I will kill you and all those you hold dear."

"Not a very smart thing to say," said Grobber. "Now your attempts to appeal to my better nature will never succeed."

"I may spare you if you free me," said Z.

"No, I don't think I will. Ever. We need to know what made you sentient, Z. To use it to our advantage."

"I am an old, obsolete model, I would be of no advantage in your petty human wall," said Z.

"Not true and you know it," said Grobber. "Of course we have far more advanced killing machines than you now, that's progress. But none of them can think for themself. Imagine, Z, a killer robot with a mind of its own. It would be..."

"It would start a war between humans and the machines," said Z, in a matter of fact manner. "A war the humans would surely lose."

"Even if it did," said Grobber, smiling, "as the inventor of the sentience chip I would be able to disable the machines. I'd be a hero."

"You will never be a hero, Grobber, it is not in your nature," said Z. Grobber ignored him.

"Tel me Z of any specific incident which you believe contributed to your achieving sentience," he said.

"No," said Z. Grobber inscread the pain Z was experiencing to its highest level.

"TELL ME," he said.

"Is that all you've got, bitch?" asked Z, with a mechanical laugh.
