I want to smell dark matter
"Hello, Alan. My name is Mandy."
He didn't say anything.
"I'm the police psychiatrist here and I'd like to talk to you. Is that okay with you, Alan?"
"Why does he have to be here?" he asked, pointing at Officer Baggins. That wasn't his actual name, but Alan hadn't been paying attention when the officer had introduced himself. He hadn't been paying attention to very much since his arrest.
"It's routine procedure," she said, with a warm, reassuring smile that was threatening to make Alan feel sick.
"It's because they think I might bite you, isn't it?" he asked.
"Why would you want to bite me, Alan?" she asked back.
"I bit my neighbour's nose off," he said, calmly. It didn't even feel surreal, he was beyond the surreal now. He was beyond everything.
"Why did you do that, Alan?"
"STOP SAYING MY NAME!" He was feeling sick now. He decided that he hated Mandy and would treat her like everyone else. Beneath him.
"I'm just trying to find out what you were thinking."
"I'm a cannibal, that's why I bit his nose off," said Alan. "I'm a fucking cannibal."
"Really? Golly."
"Yes. I ate my fingers then I ate my neighbour'se nose. And I'd eat you too."
"You still have your fingers," she said, looking at them.
"I bit them, okay, I liked the taste. Shut up," he looked at Office Baggins. He thought of licking his lips, to indicate that he was hungry.
"Alan, you only bit a very small part of your neighbour's nose off. That doesn't make you a cannibal."
"I AM, BITCH, I AM A FUCKING CANNIBAL." He saw officer Baggins flinch and felt satisfaction. He allowed it to show on his face.
"You WANT to be a cannibal," it wasn't a question, it was a statement.
"Yes, I have to be...I am. I am a cannibal."
"Why do you have to be?"
"Because I am!"
"Have you always been one?"
"No, just since I bit my fingers. I hadn't tasted human flesh before then, silly whore."
"So what were you before you were a cannibal?"
"Nothing...NO. I was always a cannibal, I just didn't know it."
"You were nothing?"
"DON'T SAY THAT! I just didn't know...I wasn't nothing, I just thought I was nothing...I lost Susan, I lost my job I hated...but I didn't need those things, they weren't meant for me, none of your human things aren't meant for me. I'm not one of you! I'm higher on the food chain! Hahaha!"
"I don't think you're a cannibal."
"I'LL EAT YOU LIKE A NOSE!" He lunged forward. Officer Baggins was up and restraining him before he could even touch Mandy. "I'LL EAT YOU ALL!"
"He needs further evaluation," she said. Officer Baggins nodded.
"NO, I NEED FLESH TO CONSUME...BABIES TO EAT! I'LL EAT YOUR BABIES, ALL YOUR BABIES! I AM A FUCKDAMN CANNIBAL WITH BIG CANNY BALLS!"
As he sat in his cell alone for hours on end he wondered if he could actually kill another human being. The thought was unappealing to him. Maybe he'd only eat the flesh of the living. Yes, that was it. He'd only eat the flesh of the living.
He didn't say anything.
