Story for the day (Thursday)

CaptainWacky

I want to smell dark matter
He followed her as she stacked the shelves. She was humming to herself and didn't seem to notice him. He stood directly behind her, thinking of all the things he wanted to say to her, thinking about how this would be his last chance to ever say those things to her.

"Stop breathing down my neck," she said. "Do you want something?"

"I wasn't...oh...no, I just...umm," he tried to say more, but everything he'd wanted to say was gone from his head. He tried to pull it back but it swirled around and he just couldn't make himself say it. She walked on, without even looking at him.

"You're in a funny mood today," she said, with what could have been affection. He was never really sure if it was affection or pity. "Even funnier than usual."

"I hate this job!" he blurted out, even though it wasn't one of the things he'd planned to say. She actually turned to look at him now. She was so beautiful he couldn't keep eye contact with her for more than three seconds. He ended up looking at her breasts, then the floor. "Don't you hate this job?" he added, meekly.

"I don't enjoy it," she said. "Especially being around some of my co-workers, but it's just something to do to pay me tuition fees. I've applied for a few better jobs recently, I should be out of here soon."

"Oh," he said. "I'll miss you."

"We hardly talk," she laughed.

"Yeah...but when we do...it's good. Isn't it? Isn't it good?"

"You know a lot about Lost," she said. They'd had a ten minute conversation about Lost once. It was the closest he'd ever come to having sex with a girl.

"Yeah...but...there's, like, a connection between us...I feel," he forced it out.

"Okay, now you're being creepy," she said, and there was definitely no affection in her voice. "And here's Steve. Want to tell him about our connection?"

"No...no Susan, I don't...sorry, I was just..." but she had already turned and walked towards her boyfriend, who she embraced.

"How's the weirdo doing?" Steve asked her, looking at him with disdain. He said nothing.

"Leave him alone, he's harmless, just a bit slow," said Susan. He felt happy and embarrassed at the same time. "Let's go."

"I'm going to kill myself tonight," he said. Or he tried to, anyway. He only managed to get out "I'm going to kill" but, probably luckily, she didn't hear him. She and Steve were gone.

He smashed up some of the shop's stock. It felt good.

He didn't kill himself that night, but he didn't go into work the next day either.
