Welcome to our live coverage of SummerSlam from the T.D. Banknorth Garden in Boston. We're looking for your thoughts on tonight's show, so you can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected].
Rey Mysterio vs. Chavo Guerrero opens the show. The finish can't come until Vickie Guerrero comes to ringside. JBL said that Rey exploiting Eddie's name is a disgrace.
I guess the crowd thought the same thing. By the time the match was over, the fans were not only booing Chavo, but booed Vickie coming out out to the ring, and then booed Mysterio as well. The crowd turned on Rey when he did the three amigos, clearly seeing the exploitation of Eddie went too far. Vickie tripped Rey when he was on top for the frog splash. Chavo then used a brainbuster and frog splash to win. Nothing at all wrong with the match, other than the idea behind it, but it didn't get over and nowhere close to what you'd expect from a singles match from these two.
Edge & Lita confronted Booker & Sharmell. Booker's fake British accent was way clumsy. The scripting of this was atrocious but Edge's delivery made it okay. Each challenged the other to come to their show this week.
Big Show vs. Sabu is up next. They don't even pretend the ECW title is anything more then prelim level. Show won after a spinebuster through one table, and a choke slam through another. It was what you'd expect. Kind of clumsy, a few big table breaking spots that got over, and a lot of sloppy shots as well. The first table Sabu brought out got a far bigger reaction than any wrestler that has appeared so far this night, which is a sad reflection of the babyfaces so far. Sabu got up and tried to play to the crowd for the sympathy reaction and got nothing.
Something is going on with Layla since we've got a video package on the finals.
It was her initiation. All the women dissed her but then did an about face. Basically they took her into the shower and started the shower and pulled up her dress to show ass shots.
Hulk Hogan vs. Randy Orton is up next. Hogan won with a legdrop in the middle. He did give Orton an RKO spot before the finish where Hogan didn't kick out, but got his foot on the rope to break the pin. Hogan got a super reaction. The match was okay given Hogan's limitations. He did his trademark stuff that he could do, but it was a basic simple stuff that Hogan did that mostly didn't look good. Funny gimmick infringement spot as a mock on Shawn Michaels was Hogan doing a crotch chop spot. That was funny as hell.
Ric Flair vs. Mick Foley is up next in the I Quit match. Match was a lot shorter than you'd think at less than 13:00. It was a bloody weapons match. Basically Foley destroyed Flair with a barbed wire board, barbed wire bat and thumb tacks. Flair bled as heavy as you'd expect. Flair then made a comeback using the barbed wire bat on Foley's arm. Foley took a Nestea plunge with his had cracking a garbage can and the trainer stopped the match. Flair refused to accept a trainer stop and said he wanted Foley to quit. Flair continued to beat on him and was using the barbed wire bat to his eye and Melina threw in the towel. Flair again refused to accept a towel thrown in as the finish. Flair took the bat and made threats of using the barbed wire bat on Melina and Foley then quit. It was a mostly just tons of bleeding and pain, no wrestling involved at all.
King Booker vs. Batista for the World title is up now. These guys are in a terrible position on the show with a dead angle and following two legends matches. Really bad. Everyone knew it, too. Crowd not much into it and Batista had nothing. He was is slow and tentative on everything he did. The fans will overlook it in Hogan, and I can't say they noticed it in Batista as much as he never got them going. Booker was okay, nothing more. Finish was Batista setting up a finish when Sharmell jumped on his back for the DQ. Post-match was supposed to be Batista giving him the Batista bomb, but he lost Booker the first time and had to do it a second time.
DX vs. McMahons is next. McMahons will have Umaga interfering and DX has a secret monster, who could be Khali. DX couldn't get the crowd going even one-third as loud as Hogan did, and you could see in HHH's face he wasn't happy about it, even after doing the cheap plug for Boston. The surprise was Kane, not Khali. Early in the match DX dispatched all five Spirit Squad members. Then it was Finlay, Show, Regal and Kennedy who laid out DX with Show putting HHH through the ECW table. For several minutes Vince & Shane beat up Shawn. HHH recovered. Final saw Shane tease doing a Van Terminator on HHH, but Shawn superkicked him. HHH hit Vince with a garbage can, Shawn used a superkick and HHH pinned Vince after a pedigree. It was good for what it was. Michaels hurt his right arm legit, maybe a shoulder separation or dislocation, when he and Shane went over the top rope on a clothesline bump together. You could see he was hurting bad and couldn't raise his arm.
Edge vs. John Cena is up last as the main event. Title can change hands via DQ. Real good main event. Several times Lita was about to interfere but Edge waved her off because he'd get DQ'd. Crowd booed Cena most of the match, but by the end the pro-Cena fans were a lot louder. Finish saw Lita give Edge Knux. Cena had both Edge & Lita on his back for a double FU. He dropped Lita and the Edge escaped and hit Cena with the Knux and got the pin to keep the title.
Thanks for joining us.
