Patrick Mahomes: Historic matchup vs. Jalen Hurts 'special'

Thirty-five years after Doug Williams became the first Black quarterback to start in the Super Bowl, this season's NFL championship game will have two Black starting quarterbacks for the first time. Super Bowl LVII will feature Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs and Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Williams led Washington to a 42-10 win over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXII following the 1987 season. He threw for 340 yards and four touchdowns. Since then, six Black quarterbacks have started in the Super Bowl, including Mahomes twice, but never two in the same game.

Mahomes: Sting of LV loss motivation to get back to Super Bowl

When it comes to Super Bowls, Patrick Mahomes knows the euphoria of a victory and the frustration of a defeat. He said the memories of the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl loss are more powerful than those of their win. "The win is amazing," Mahomes said Monday at the Super Bowl's opening night. "It's one of the best moments of your entire life. You take away all the positives from that. But that loss, that stings. That motivates you for years. What it's done for me is it's motivated me to be back in this game again. I want to make sure that I can have that winning feeling and not that losing one because that losing feeling is one you'll never forget." Mahomes and the Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV but lost the next season to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV.

Eric Bieniemy: 'Unfortunate' to miss out on HC jobs, but repeat SB trips lessen sting

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, speaking to reporters during Monday's Super Bowl Opening Night, stayed true to a saying he likes to use with his players. "Be where your feet are" is the phrase -- and when asked about his feelings toward returning to the Chiefs next season, Bieniemy upheld his motto. The 53-year-old said he'll talk with coach Andy Reid when the time is right, which will be sometime after Super Bowl LVII on Sunday. As more head-coaching vacancies get filled by coaches other than himself, Bieniemy relishes the fact that he's still coaching this deep into a season. Bieniemy, who has been the Chiefs' offensive coordinator since 2018 after five seasons as Kansas City's running backs coach, doesn't know if his feelings would be different if the Chiefs didn't keep going this deep in the playoffs.

Behind the meteoric rise of Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts

Receiver A.J. Brown was asked whether he examined the Philadelphia Eagles' roster before agreeing to a four-year, $100 million extension in April to finalize his trade from the Tennessee Titans. "No, unfortunately," he said last week, as preparations for Super Bowl LVII got underway. "All I needed to know was who was going to be my quarterback. That told me everything I needed to know." The public was not as sold. Hurts showed undeniable leadership traits and some on-field promise in his first full year as a starter in 2021, but questions about his ceiling -- driven mainly by subpar accuracy numbers -- lingered into last offseason. Chiefs' Chad Henne says Super Bowl win will be final game

Chad Henne is calling it a career in a manner few in football are able to -- as a Super Bowl champion. The veteran quarterback took to social media shortly after his Kansas City Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII on Sunday night to say the game would be his last in the NFL. "Calling it a career. Capping it off with @budlight and another ring," he wrote on Instagram. Henne, 37, didn't play in Kansas City's dramatic 38-35 win, although it looked like he might enter the game when Patrick Mahomes aggravated a right ankle injury late in the first half. Mahomes was hobbled but never missed time, instead leading the Chiefs to their second Super Bowl title in the past four seasons.
