World Record Flashback: When David Wilkie Wowed the World in 200 Breaststroke at 1976 Olympics

Call him the forgotten man. Overlooked. Underappreciated. Lost amid an iconic week by the globe’s premier power. Truthfully, it’s an unfortunate circumstance, although not difficult to understand. With the United States overpowering the men’s competition at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, David Wilkie became an afterthought who deserved much more recognition.

To gain a full perspective of why Wilkie hasn’t received his proper due through the years, we must first examine what the United States pulled off in Montreal. Not only did the Americans win all but one event, they registered nine gold-silver showings and swept the podium in four events. Because we are in an age of greater representation, we’ll never see anything close.

Second to Cal Last Season, Arizona State Men Look Like Team of Destiny in 2024

In the first meeting between the two teams last season, the Arizona State men crushed defending national champion California 211 to 87 at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. But despite the blowout score, any neutral observer could tell that this dual meet did not accurately represent a full-strength matchup between the two programs. Arizona State raced in tech suits, and Leon Marchand took down the NCAA record in the 400 IM while beating the former record holder, Cal’s Hugo Gonzalez, a whopping 26 seconds. Cal, racing in practice suits, won only two events all day, with Destin Lasco claiming the backstroke wins.

A little over one month later at the Pac-12 Championships, the Sun Devils again knocked off the Golden Bears, scoring 897.5 points to Cal’s 819. This matchup was a better show of the two teams’ ability, but still, the feeling remained that Cal would show up big-time when a national title was on the line three weeks later in Minneapolis. After all, the Bears had placed first or second in the country every season since 2010, head coach Dave Durden’s third year in Berkeley.

Pacific Games 2023: Two swimming records tumble as New Caledonia extends medal tally lead

Two new Pacific Games swimming records were set on Thursday at the Aquatic Centre in Honiara as the 2023 Pacific Games rolls towards it first full week of competition.

The day also saw 24 gold medals won and New Caledonia's dominance in the pool being disrupted again, although they continue to advance in their lead at the top of medal tally.

New Caledonia's hold at the top increased overnight with their gold medal haul at 32 and their total haul of medals now standing at 80.

Australia keeps the second spot with 23 gold and Samoa retains third overnight with 18 gold.

A new Pacific Games record of 50.05 seconds was set by Cook Islands' Wesley Roberts in the men's 100m freestyle, breaking the record of 50.44 second, set by Stephane Debaere at the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby.
