Taking stock of World Cup 2006

Now that we have reached the semis. Let's take stock of this world cup. Post any surprises, disappointments, missed opportunities, and general bitching.

I'll go first.

England obviously was a major disappointment. Beckham was a non-factor and neither was Owen.

Argentina vs Germany should have been a semifinal game or even maybe the final match. It's regretable to see such a great match-up so early in the tournament.

France seems to have come to life over the past 2 games or so after a very lackluster start. Barthez appears to be in great shape having weathered everthing the Brazilians could throw at him. Zidane arguably had the best looking goal of the tournament against Ghana and Thierry Henry seems to have found his game again. After a slow start the French coach is now making some pretty smart coaching decisions.

Italy, IMO, should NOT be in the Semis. They are not a good team and seems to have gotten this far on sheer luck and misfortune of their prior opponents.

Germany--what can I say? Perhaps the best team of the tourney. Klose is in great shape although he appears to be showing signs of slowing down. Oliver Neuville should start every game but doesn't for some reason. Germany vs France will probably be the Final Match-up.

Surprises: Ukraine, Ghana, Angola, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, Ukraine, Ecuador. All around great effort!!

Disappointments: USA, Mexico, Poland, Brazil (Ronaldinho, wtf dude!!), Argentina.

off the top of my head:

From the get-go I questioned writing off France.

Germany has shown incredible resolve and that "12th man" may prove to be their ace in the hole.

I do not agree Beckham was a non-factor.
England had more potential to win this time than ever before - but if they didn't have bad luck, they'd have no luck at all. Anything that could go wrong, did.
[...Except for Hargreaves, who acquitted himself well, I must admit.]

I was sorry to see Australia leave the way they did. I look forward to watching them play again. Same with the Africans; these teams are really growing and learning.
Ukraine needs to have more than one gifted player.

*throws hands in the air*
Italy plays like Italy plays.
Only a fan would understand how maddening/wonderful they can be.
At the exact same moment.

2 good hargreaves performances does not repair being a usless tosser for 5 years

if he plays well the next 10-15 games i will be the first to retract the tosser statement and just call him a C**T.......
