Man, this place seems like a real shithole. I can't believe how many negative videos there are about this place.

Mother pleads guilty to abandoning newborn son in Wilmington trash can

A woman will spend at least 16 years in prison after she pleaded guilty to the attempted first-degree murder of her newborn son.

Maryuri Estefany Calix-Macedo, 23, was arrested and charged with first-degree attempted murder in July 2020 — two days after she gave birth to a son, tied him inside a black trash bag and placed him in a trash can.

The child survived and is healthy, now nearing his second birthday. Calix-Macedo was 21 at the time she gave birth.

Calix-Macedo pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder, one count of intentional child abuse and one count of negligent child abuse on Monday morning in New Hanover County court.

In a prepared statement translated by a court translator, Calix-Macedo said the guilt and pain she feels will "never go away."

Crimes of the Cape Fear: Man charged with murder kills witness while free on bond

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - In some neighborhoods, not cooperating with police is part of the culture. Even though residents living in high crime areas are more likely to become victims of crime, or to be impacted by the crime around them, the “don’t snitch” mentality pervades. Many people are simply more afraid of retaliation by criminals if they are caught talking to police than they are of being victimized if they say nothing.

But that strategy can backfire, as Creekwood residents learned the hard way nearly a decade ago.

It started with the shooting death of 30-year-old Brian Grant. He lived with his girlfriend, named Ebony, in Wilmington’s Creekwood housing development. Nashid Porter was staying with a friend in a house nearby, and got into an argument with Grant the night of July 26, 2012. The men were reportedly fighting over Ebony. The next morning, as Grant came to the front door to answer someone loudly knocking, Porter was waiting for him, and shot him at point blank range in the face.

“Brian Grant... was a totally innocent victim. Did nothing wrong. Did nothing to provoke this. Was truly shot walking out of the sanctity of his own home. As a father, as a stepdad, the only person there was a 9-year-old girl upstairs. He was completely innocent,” District Attorney Ben David said of the shooting.

Crimes of the Cape Fear: Woman murdered inside her Landfall home by estranged husband

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - It was a story that shocked the whole community. A prominent real estate agent and philanthropist murdered inside her own home in Wilmington’s exclusive Landfall community.

It happened the morning of September 29, 2004. 67-year-old Gail Tice was shot three times by her estranged husband, Robert Hewson. He had scaled the fence of her gated community, and was lying in wait when she came downstairs that morning. Just days earlier, Tice had informed Hewson she wanted to end their marriage, and had a restraining order in place against him.

“I received a call from the [Wilmington Police Department] that a murder just happened in Landfall. I thought someone was joking with me,” District Attorney Ben David recalled of his surprise hearing that someone had been killed in what is arguably the safest neighborhood in town. Landfall, just over the bridge from Wrightsville Beach, sees very little crime and has 24-hour security.

Nearly 20 years later, WECT has uncovered new details about the circumstances that led to Tice’s murder, and the laws that have changed at least in part because of this unusual case.
