Idris Elba Closing in on Role of Roland Deschain In ?The Dark Tower? | Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures and Media Rights Capital may just have found their lead gunslinger for The Dark Tower, the Stephen King novel series set in a world woven with magic and revolving around the gunslinger Roland Deschain. I’m told that Idris Elba has emerged as the front-runner to play Deschain. He would square off against Matthew McConaughey, who’s in talks to play the villainous Man in Black. Nikolaj Arcel is directing.

There is no deal yet, and nobody would comment for the story. But this would give Elba that long-awaited star vehicle that has seemed inevitable, coming after all of the speculative questions over whether the 007 franchise would install an actor of color into the iconic James Bond role after Elba was mentioned as a strong possibility to replace Daniel Craig. King wrote the Deschain character as white — at least that is how he is depicted in the book cover illustrations — but in Elba they get a top actor who has shown in the BBC series Luther and other works that he is a movie star with swagger.

To me, the color of the gunslinger doesn't matter. What I care about is how fast he can draw...and that he takes care of the ka-tet.

(I've never read the books, aren't they a mess with a terrible ending?)
 
I love the books SO MUCH. The ending was a bit meh, but it's kinda like Lost... did you love the journey?
 
Rolands colour diosnet really matter, in the book there is a black woman who calls him a honkey because she is black, but make her asian and she can hate black and wite, its all good.
 
Susannah being African American is pretty important to her character, they could leave out the honky stuff without changing her race. They just have to find a different reason for her not to trust Roland. They could change it to just him being a man.
 
It's just that the only time the I hear the books discussed it's people saying they hate the ending, OKAY. I'm sure they're good!
 
The first four are better than the last three, I cant comment on the extra one he somehow squeezed in later, as I never read it.

The ending is a bit of a bummer, without wanting to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read it, anyone who has would have found the penultimate episode of Doctor who this year quite familiar.
 
I loved books 1,2,3,5,6 didn't care much for 4, thought 7 was pretty good (even without being crazy about the ending), haven't read 8.
 
There is no Dark Tower 8. It ends with 7.

Euleria is a prequel short story and 4.5 Wind Thru the Keyhole is a spinoff/short story.

And this TV show is god awful. A travesty. A black man as Roland is so unfitting. Can't wait to hear Odetta call him a cracker.

They should just do an anime - wonder if Stephen King knows what those are.
