THE FIRST TROLL

Blondie's mention of Orson Welles's 'War of the Worlds' prank back in '38 got me wondering:

What, exactly, would you characterize as the first true "troll" in history?

And I mean dig deep and way back, historians. Prize goes to the best, not necessarily the oldest, example (a cave painting of jack fucking a water buffalo in the neck wouldn't necessarily win --though it should.) of a pre-internet-troll.

Gulf of Tonkin created the Vietnam troll. That one probably should be voted best one.

The Final Solution, and subsequent Denial Theory is the most excellent troll yet.

I don't know about the first one, but an early one was Voltaire's little prank. He sent out something like 100 anonymous letters to prominent Parisians. All it said was "All is discovered; flee at once." A good many of them disappeared never to be seen again.

Benjamin Franklin and the Poor Richard's Almanac.
Now that was a funny troll.
