THE GREAT SECRET: EXPOSED!

Lord Raffles

New member
VENI, VIDI, VICI

And therefore, since I cannot prove a lover,
To entertain these fair well-spoken days,
I am determined to prove a villain
And hate the idle pleasures of these days.

Eventually the gnashing of teeth reached Alex, and he proved himself awesome again by talking to Raffles, researching him, deciding he was an evil jerk, and banning him on August 1st. Though many were still fearful because the day before, July 31st, word came out that Darkfox allegedly had tried to kill himself. For real. But thankfully he didn’t and came back smiling and everyone was happy.

THE mysticism that I hold is the proof of my triumph. Reasoning does not communicate in cyberspace, emotion does. Reasoning convinces, it does not attract. Flame-wars are stronger than syllogisms. Science claims to explain away miracles, but in the eye of the crowd the miracle remains: it seduces and creates converts. Perhaps, a hundred years on, people will say that on the internet a Messiah arose who started simply by posting a few threads to a community of fifty and ended up evangelizing a million. No one can doubt any more that behind the events of December 1st 2004 there lied a historical transformation of unfathomable consequences for the users of Charas. For it was this date that I, Lord Raffles, servant of truth and enlightenment made my first humble contribution to the forum of Charas.

April 12, 2006 is also an important date that shall live on in the hearts and minds of every Charadork, as you shall see from the following quote taken from their very own secret (lol) forum of which I have always known of. The "secret" forum is known as Sanctuary Fortress. My spy network is vast Charas, be warned...

This forum is a test of an idea I developed a while ago. You need 800 posts to be able to see this forum. There is also a level that requires 150 posts or a mere 10. In the event of a total spam attack, I could require that ALL forums require at least 10 posts to be visible. No noobs would be able to see the forums or to obtain any new posts. Obviously this would prevent normal people from seeing the forums as well as Raffles logins so I don't want to do this lightly.

In any event, I'm going to keep this forum around experimentally. It's sort of a private forum that's visible by any member that's made 800 posts,. This is NOT AN ELITIST ALL OF ALL FORUM! Instead it's here for you to address forum concerns. Sort of like sending a private message to all the Charas veterans at once.

Don't abuse it and start general purpose topics here or this whole place will vanish like a soap bubble.

The revolution I have carried out on the community of Charas is a total one. It has embraced all areas of its forum’s life and transformed them from below. It has completely changed and recast the relationship of it’s users to each other, to the moderators, and to the purpose of the forum itself. It was in fact the breakthrough of a fresh world-view for myself.

Today I can claim with absolute confidence - I will shout it out loud – that the Charas community is the forum of cowardice, who on account of my genius has now inwardly gone in on itself and as a result of this domestic choice has failed to stand the test of history. Even today the prying eyes of Charas still look on our Kingdom with fear for what may lie ahead:

Last time charas was mentioned on TK was 6 days ago.
And it was raffles making another threat thread. Anyone else have any speculation whether or not we are out of the woods as far as TK is concerned?

What I had undertaken on December 1st 2004 was an act of audacity, and I had no illusions about the difficulties of the undertaking. They were many and complex, but I had a firm faith in my ability to overcome them. I am not alone. Not all my friends of yesterday will follow me; but many other rebellious spirits will gather around me - be warned Charas, for I am on the march...

iwillrulety5.jpg

I am on the way! And taking up this march once more - after what was a brief respite - it is to you that I hail with a cry of greeting dear Charas, in the certainty that it will not fall on deaf ears in your ranks, but summon forth a powerful response. The cry in question is a word which I would never have uttered in normal times, but which today I shout out loud, at the top of my voice, with absolute sincerity and steadfast conviction, a word which is both dreadful and awesome: WAR!

ONE STRUGGLE! ONE GOAL: THE DESTRUCTION OF CHARAS!

Raff I can only hope that when Ty thinks about dedicating time & energy to taking on the Mugenboogeymen over at THE, he sees your example and takes it as a cautionary tale.

Lord Raffles, I have taken a hiatus from opening your threads. And I will continue this hiatus. But I wish you well. No hard feelings. You are great, and you are brilliant, and far too interesting for me. I must resign myself to reading only boring uninteresting immature threads from now on. Thank you for keeping TK honest.

Well. I’m not quite sure how, but it seems the whole troll conflict has ended peacefully. The aftermath of our perhaps-ill-advised assault seems to have left some of our people over there, and some of the TKers over here, but everyone seems to be getting along for the time being. Maybe everyone just got tired and bored of conflict And so I happily title this post Epilogue – with hope, the last word on this chaotic week.

So many people helped Charas out through this rough time… Midnight, for always doing what was necessary; Warxe, for constant good advise and unparalled patriotism towards what Charas stands for; Kijuki, for never straying from honor and encouraging us all to remember it’s not about the end, it’s about who we are; Darkfox, for keeping his smile even when dealing with some of the worst scum on the internet; Trevlac, for being a useless hacker that nonetheless had good intentions and getting Alex to add that IP feature; FFL, for keeping me up to date and down to earth; Razor, for just being so RIGHT about Raffles from the very beginning; Charaman, whom no one trusted but in the end helped Charas out tremendously; Osmose, for making sure I never got TOO carried away with glorious invasion plans; MrMister, for no reason in particular but I feel compelled to add his name to this list anyway.

But mainly, it’s all the people I *didn’t* mention up there that surprised me the most. All the people here in Sanctuary, and all the people with less than 800 posts but the right attitude. At the beginning of this I saw a weak Charas. People were talking about quitting, about how much this spam sucked, how unfun everything is. Now I see a war-hardened Charas. People may not always agree on what we should do, but they response to outside threats the same – “we don’t want any trolls here! Get out!”

I’m so proud of this forum! Seriously. And I feel I’ve let it down a bit by not being as good of a leader as I should have been maybe. But you guys picked up the slack.

I hope this TrollKingdom situation will be a thing of the past, a mere legend to tell newbies who show up in a few weeks. But I’m leaving Sanctuary here. Let it stand as a monument to our strength and a place we can debate in crisis. Go back to the All of All, to the Forum Gaming, to the Games and Requests and all the other forums of Charas. It’s my sincerest hope that we will not need this place ever again, but I do not plan on being caught off guard if we do.

After all, Raffles is still out there. The TKers have no real love for him and I doubt he’ll rile that forum against us again, but there are surely more nests of trolls for him to find. And maybe TrollKingdom is planning another attack soon, and this peace is to just catch us off guard. Who knows. What I can assure you is that the moderator staff will do their best to protect these forums with fairness and justice.

Stand together Charas, and be pleased. You earned this breath of peace. Enjoy it.

"A Brief History of Charas’s conflict with TrollKingdom"
(TAKEN FROM THE SECRET CHARAS FORUM "SANCTUARY")

A Brief History of Charas’s conflict with TrollKingdom

(it’s long, but I’m writing it for my own benefit if nothing else. History must be remembered)

It has been six days since this crisis began, and two days since I realized that I could not end it entirely on my own. My head is still spinning a little as I ponder recent events and try to figure out exactly what happened and, more importantly, why. Maybe I will never quite get it right. But here is how I remember it at least.

Details are sketchy at when, but at some point Lord Raffles went to TrollKingdom and revealed Charas to them. Trolls have a method. The more they can get us to ban people, the more they can get us to restrict the forums, the less fun it is for everyone. For you guys. You’ll get confused, get bored, and wander off for greener pastures. Forums dry up like grapes in the sun and become husks of what they were in their glory. And another badge would be added to their histories; another forum destroyed. Another victory for the trolls. Proof of their power to change the world.

I’ll admit it; we’re an odd forum. Us moderators are somewhat harsh because people let us get away with banning people without reason because we’re trusted not to abuse us. And with Alex mostly not around there are some creeping forum glitches (quote bug anyone?) that people are told not to use but are never fixed. We were prime targets for trolls. A low average age, a carefree place, dreamers that would rather work on programming video games than deal with a serious and dedicated assault.

And so we were targeted en mass. On Monday, Riff Raff, Omega Weapon, Lord Wang, and others came over and were as controversial and as offensive as possible. The Lord Raffles alarm bells went off immediately of course, but we quickly realized that this wasn’t all him. It wasn’t all one person. This was a different sort of threat.

Trolls expect a few of their accounts to get banned. What they did not expect perhaps was the fierceness and effectiveness of our resistance. We banned the lot of them. Monday night, a large chat room was held with Lord Raffles, myself, and 8 other Charas members. Raffles proclaimed the doom of Charas (again) but at the end said he was joking. We all had a good laugh and a solid night’s sleep, believing that Monday would be the end of it.

It wasn’t. More trolls showed up on Tuesday. Many were caught and banned, but the mods began to worry about how long this would be going on. I created a forum, Sanctuary, as a test to see how well I could shelter forums against people without many posts.

Wednesday was a third day of troll madness. More accounts were banned on Wednesday than either of the two previous, and I began to wonder how long this was going to go on. The common Charasite (has that terminology discussion been concluded yet?) discovered Sanctuary and began to post there, and so my little test turned into a place where the Charas loyals freely talked about what was happening to our forum. TrollKingdom was discovered; the home of our enemies and also a great tool of our defense. Completely unaware of our watching, the TKers posted their troll screennames and discussed tactics to catch us off guard, and these were used quite effectively in catching trolls before they could cause any havoc. Some pushed for an immediate full-scale invasion of their forums, others hacking, others a diplomatic solution, and many wished to simply wait and watch. The watchers won out, for a small time.

On Thursday, many things happened very fast. After the usual bunch of trolls were banned the mods began to talk and discovered another forum being targeted by TrollKingdom: a locked-down paranoid husk of a place that was clearly once an open-minded peace-loving community named Ex Isle. The Charas mods contacted one of the administrators in a chat room with the intent of warning them about TK, only to find that they were quite well aware of the trolls. It seemed that Ex Isle had been bearing the assault of TrollKingdom for YEARS. The assaults came and went, the admin told us, and they kept everything locked down tight all the time to prevent most of it.

I had no intention of letting Charas fall that far. After a long talk with Trevlac and Alex (Yes, ALEX, the Master!) about IP banning and how useless it would be against trolls with proxies that hide their real IPs, the mods finally decided it was time to send several undercover operatives into TrollKingdom to win their trust and possibly undermine their assault on Charas. We were too late: a poster named CHARAS UNITED publically advertised the TK forums on Charas. It was none of us; clearly the trolls knew we were watching them. The time for secrecy was over and I authorized anyone who wanted to go over there and cause trouble.

The “invasion” sparked a lot of controversy here on Charas. Some people had clearly had enough and wanted some payback. Others were appalled by the move, claiming we had sunk to their level. Many people thought there must be a better option, though some admitted they had no idea what it was and thought the attacks were okay. A few people pointed out that there was going to be fighting one way or the other and it was better over on THEIR forums rather then OURS, but others steadfastly believed that having trolls attack us every day of the week would be better than an immature spamfest since no matter what we did, it wouldn’t shut down their forums. A few people went so far as to be openly disgusted in public, and Osmose felt this was the “last straw” and resigned from being a mod on a team of who’s policies he disagreed with and where he had no real duties.

The invasion did take place. Dozens of posts, both from invading Charas posters and from TK members appeared within an hour or two. Support the war or not, almost everyone believed that it would result in incredible backlash on our own forums from very annoyed trolls. Realizing how little public support I had and how I very much needed to step away from the situation and stop trying to run it all myself, I vowed to take three days off and not log in at Charas at what everyone believed was the most crucial time of our defense.

To my own personal amazement when I checked in later, the counterassault didn’t happen. Though a few trolls registered on Charas immediately after the invasion, none of them seemed too interested in, well, trolling. A couple even openly wore their TK login names. No threads needed to be deleted. No logins needed to be banned. And I’m really not sure why.

I write this late on Saturday night, six days after the trouble started. We’ve entered an almost peaceful coexistence with TrollKingdom. A few invading Charas members remain over there and several of their people are on Charas. While I wouldn’t call them our allies, we seem to be tolerating eachother for the time. Maybe it’s a trick by the trolls to lure us into a false sense of security before they attack again. Who knows. Though Raffles continues his threats, they at TrollKingdom certainly have no love for him. I guess I can’t expect courtesy among trolls. Charas will still have to watch for suspicious activity both on our own forums and on several others but least at this point, on this night, Charas is at peace. Perhaps history will not judge my actions too harshly after all.

YOUR SECRETS ARE MINE!

THE STRONG MAN ALONE IS RIGHT!

IN the history of cyberspace it has always been the inexorable moderator who struggles for domination over the regular user. No user can remove this hand from its throat except by force. Only the assembled and concentrated might of a forum, rearing up in strength can defy the international enslavement of peoples. Such a process is and remains a bloody one…

propbn5.jpg

ALL my life I have been a 'have-not.' At home I was a 'have-not.' I regard myself as belonging to them and have always fought exclusively for them. I defended them and, therefore, I stand before the world as their representative.

I shall never recognize the claim of others to that which they have taken by force. Under no circumstances can I acknowledge this claim with regard to that which has been taken from the users of Charas by their administration. It is interesting to examine the troubled lives of these Administrators. Examining this problem more closely, we see that the users of Charas themselves have originally no convictions of their own. Their convictions are formed, of course, just as everywhere else. The decisive question is who enlightens these users, who educates them? In charas, it is actually fear that rules; that is, nothing more than a clique of a few users who possess untold power and, as a consequence of the peculiar structure of their forum life, are more or less independent and free. They say: 'Here we have liberty.' By this they mean, above all, that THEY have liberty, while all of their users live under the fear of upsetting the moderator Darkfox, the self-proclaimed so-called "game designer" & administrator. If this willful tyrant took the time and energy he put into sponging my name out of existence, he would by this time in history have to his name at the very least five RPGs, that his forum members he professes to love could have enjoyed. Instead, the ever immature & spiteful Darkfox met his crossroads and decided that total war was the answer, and as a consequence freedom and liberty have been torn asunder. Treaties have been signed that will hold Charas down for years!

It is self-evident that where this Charas administration rules, the users as such are not taken into consideration at all. The only thing that matters is the existence of a handful of gigantic nerds who decide all the rules and their respective punishments and, through them, control the Charalites. The masses of the people do not interest them in the least. They are interested in them just as are all tyrants- only when membership numbers are waning. Otherwise, the life of the masses is a matter of complete indifference to them.

Lord Raffles, I strongly urge you to visit the badlands once a day and make at least one post there a day. I know it will be difficult, but sometimes going out of your comfort zone can be good for you. In fact, you can go one step further and also say hi to the folks in the Mine Field. But only if you are couragous enough.
And I already know I mispell words-so no need to point it out to me-LR readers.

SANCTUARY:
The Last Hope

Whether or not I am an obsessed fanatic is a secondary matter. World history teaches us that no one became great through timidity: it was timidity that brought them to their ruin.

History therefore proves: a forum dies when its existence is secured by the whims of an egocentric roll. Charas can only exist now to fight my amazing extremes with their extremes; against the infection of Rafflism, against the troll pestilence they must now hold aloft a flaming ideal. And if timid charadorks amongst their ranks now speak of leaving this beloved Charas, the protagonists of this conflict that I were singled out in 2004 are now forever trapped in a neo cyber patriotism, and shall forever more be forced to declare for the rest of their internet existence "Charas" - and only "Charas"...

byfront.jpg

That is the mightiest thing which this band of mediocre dorks have ever created for themselves: hoping that the secret forum "sanctuary" will save them in this hour of confusion, to which it's members can pledge themselves to, so that the charadorks may at least find once again a place which may bring calm to their hearts.

Oh, dear Raffles, if you would only use your powers for something productive and glorious. Perhaps get on those super secret Al Qeada boards and ruffle their feathers, work them up into a lather so that they eat themselves in a self imposed quarantine. A master feat for a master troll that would be worthy of world acknowledgment and praise.
