The Moon is a Harsh Mistress: Book Two (Warning: Spoilers)

^^^I love Mannie's comment that fighting a revolution isn't half as much trouble as winning it. The problems associated with overthrowing a government are always much more clear cut than resolving issues that arise when you are in charge.

This is applicable to modern politics where our governments (u.s. and u.k.) are thrown out without bloodshed. If you look at the Republican Revolution that swept the Democrats out of power you can see the same kind of problems. I think you could argue that in some ways Newt Gingrich was more effective as an opposition leader than as Speaker of the House.

I think what's really interesting in book two is the different forms of government Prof comes up with when the ad hoc congress he put in place got carried away and actually came up with a proposal for a traditional parliamentary government.

I think that some of them were quite interesting. One idea of choosing representatives who could gain a set number of signatures on a petition intrigues me, because it does offer the possible benefit of keeping people from feeling disenfranchised. He also came up with the idea of a bi cameral legislature where the lower house could only pass bills with a 2/3 majority while the upper house could veto bills if 1/3 voted against.

Think about the years when Clinton had to work with a Republican controlled congress. You might argue that not much got done, but if you look at the results, whether you give credit to Clinton or the Congress the state of the economy was healthy, the budget was balanced and I suspect that had Gore been elected, more tax cuts would have been in the works. Prof's proposal is simply taking the checks and balances approach of the U.S founding fathers to an extreme.
