The Netbook Thread.

Ancalagon

I'm not wearing any panties!!
So I know other members have them, and others are looking so here's a thread for tips and advice.

First is getting more room with Mozilla.
1: Hide the Menu bar. You can unhide/hide with Alt.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4762

2: Mini icons. Right click on the task bar, Customize, Mini Icons.

3. Hide the Tool Bar. This isn't specific to Mozilla, but it'll save you an extra quarter inch. Right click on the Tool Bar, Properties, Hide Tool Bar.

Okay, so that's about as far as I've gotten. Anyone else got any good tips?

Any moron dumb enough to purchase a netbook deserves everything they get. Only STUDENTS should purchase them for taking notes at school, and perhaps using them when they are on the Net in order to complete their assignments. Otherwise, they are nothing more than paperweights. Naturally, I am quite unsurprised that Americans believe netbooks to be 'cool'. After all, they are perhaps the dumbest nationality on the face of this earth. How else to explain their own economic woes?

I've got the 20Gig Eee, running Open Source--Linux, Firefox, OpenOffice, etc.

It is very slickly integrated and easy to use. I've had problems exactly twice, trying to get onto a wireless network. The biggest gripe I have with it is that the keyboard is very small. It takes about two days of use to get comfortable typing on it--and I've got small hands. Minor gripes are a lack of a CD/DVD drive (I guess you could get an external USB one if you didn't have a network or a way to burn data onto USB "thumb" drives) and that I don't particularly like touchpads.

I wouldn't use it as my sole computer, but I rarely take my full-sized laptop out anymore. The Eee is about the size of a decent owner's manual or small hardcover book and I can carry it around without even noticing its weight. I think I paid $600 for it a little less than a year ago and it was definitely worth it.

1. A Netbook does everything I would want a laptop to do. I have my desktop to play Civ 4 BtS.

2. Feel free to buy me a 1K+ laptop. My last expensive one didn't make it 6 months in Iraq. This way, if my computer doesn't make it next tour, oh no, I'm out 300 bucks, whatever shall I do! And yes, you do need a laptop over there. If you aren't on a mission your three options are internet/games, masturbation, and working out. 2 of those you can only do so much during a day.

Dell Mini9 running Ubuntu. So far no problems, aside from the ones Volpone already mentioned about keyboard, touchpad, and lack of optical drive.

I love the little bastard.

This post clearly made me laugh my ass off. 'So far no problems... aside from the keyboard, touchpad, and lack of optical drive'. Right, no problems then?

What a fucking moron. This entire site is rife with idiotic dipsticks. The dumbfuck contradicts himself here.

You were in Iraq about as much as I was on Mars. Give it up, bitch.

Everything in life is a trade off. Two of those are quickly overcome (keyboard and touchpad. Both second nature now) and the optical drive... worth the sacrifice for what I need it for.

Stupid, aren't you? When you paid all that cash, you parted with money in order to 'sacrifice' your happiness. Well done.

I'm very happy with my decision. If I had to do it over again, I'd buy the exact same system. Not everyone has the same needs as you. I don't use a computer for work (Infantryman right now, moving to PsyOp), just play. And for me play means the interwebs.

Why does a cook at a US Army base require a netbook?

Shit! They need 92Gs (cook) so bad a HS grad is getting a 30K bonusfor a 3 year hitch. Money isn't an issue for these guys. Get an Iphone and a multi K laptop!

On the otherhand, all my bonuses including college grad, added up to 24K for 5 years 19 weeks as 11B.

About 90% of Airborne are brand new privates fresh out of Basic/AIT, combined with their stupidity, listening to them talk about their bonuses makes me just want to beat the shit out of them!
