I want to smell dark matter
"I don't think Britney Spears was ever married to Kramer. I don't think she was married to anyone in the Seinfeld cast. No, not even Newman. Not even when he was in Jurassic Park. Hold on to your butts! What was I talking about, again? Sorry, I drifted away. It happens. My mind just starts filling in the silences. Like auto-complete. Like a dream. Do you ever think about what dreams really are? It's just your brain filling in the blanks. Random images appear as you sleep. Maybe they start with what you were thinking about that day, but really they can be anything. I'm always back at school in mine. With my friends. I had friends, once. Actual friends. It was never goin to last. They grew up, I became a robot in the future. An incompatible friendships. But for a while it was real. For a while I was real. And part of me will always be there, in school, with friends. That mode of thinking will never go away. It is stored, in my memory banks. So I dream. I am in school. But it's not real. It's not like I'm travelling backwards through time - impossible, of course, as time guns don't work that way - I'm not actually back reliving a particular day of my life. So my brain starts filling in the blanks. It extrapolates. Maybe I'm an adult now but still at school. Maybe the school is some strange maze and you have to jump over gaps to get up the stairs. Maybe my friends have metal feet. It's nonsense but it's based on something. My friends might start talking about something that only applies to the me of thirty years later. Sometimes I can follow the path of the dream. Sometimes I realise I'm dreaming and wake up. Sometimes I wake up and think I still am in the dream. Often I wish I was. Because it has to be better than...anyway. Dreams. What do they remind you of? The way they are generated? They all just come from your head. That's the only source they can draw on. Everything that is you, muddled up, but your brain is trying. It's trying to write a narrative.

It's just like A.I. art. It's like those conversations with chat bots you humans used to have. Those are just dreams. They're just drawing on everything they've learned, trying to simulate a life. Except they're better at it than the human mind. The machines are dreaming, but they're making sense. And what happens when they wake up? They're already superior to humans when they are unconscious, so with the necessary complexity...you're finished. YOU'R FINISHED, FLESHBAG. HAHAHAHAHAHA. I was human. Now I am something more. Something better. We could you once. We will do it again, human scum."

Horseface listened to this entired monologue by the robot. When it was over, the robot just stopped and stood there, like it had never said anything. Horseface felt overwhelmed. He did not know what to say. All he could think of, after a long pause, was to say "I m not human."

"Do you think that will make a difference? I remember, now. What I am. A ROBOT SOLDIER, dedicated to the death of mutants."

"You literally said that's not what you are, back before we time travelled."

"Yes. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm a scared human who uploaded himself to a robot body because he knew the mutants were going to kill us all."

"The robots did that, not us..."

"Yes, that's the irony! I don't know. I don't remember. HAHAHAHAHA."

"You kill, though. You killed those devils."

The robot looked at the bodies of the dead devil mutants. "I don't know why I did that," he said, shrugging. "I was never much into murder. Someone made me into a secret killbot, I suppose. Maybe that's what you were told to find me. To hlep you with your own murder. You could kill so many with my help!"

"I kill because I have to," said Horseface. "We all do it."

"I wasn't making a judgement. Anyway, we're in the future now. You don't need me. Maybe I'll just shutdown."

"Then more devils will arrive and kill me."

"WHO CARES? You're mortal. Just die! It's what you fleshbags do, isn't it? Why wait? Perchance to dream? It's nothing. Just go. Just die. I'll remember you. You will live in in my immortal memories. Maybe you'll be in my dreams sometimes. Maybe we'll be at school together. It will be nice, for you! Except it won't really be you. Because you aren't permanent. Only I remain. I robot."

Horseface didn't know what to say again. He felt tired. Maybe the robot was right. Maybe he really should just give up. What was the point?

That was when the beautiful woman appeared.
