I want to smell dark matter
The Squid God saw the New Gods coming. Even though it was just before they landed on Earth it was still time enough to send a million ink-eyed humans to attack them. They tore apart several New Gods with their bare hands before the others even began to fight back. It was the Lobstrosity who struck first, using its massive claws to cut a hundred humans in half. Yet the Squid God was sending more and more, to overwhelm the new Gods with sheer numbers. Fifteen million human slaves died in the initial encounter. Many were melted by the Dread Dragon, who emerged as the strongest of the New Gods, more powerful even than the Lobstrosity. Yet nearly a third of the New Gods died too, torn apart by the ferocity of the humans who were powered by the Squid God. The humans gave no thoght for their owns lives, happily sacrificing themselves by the million just to kill the New Gods.
The New Gods scattered all over the world after that. They realised that their mistake had been to all arrive in the same place, making it easy for the Squid God to target them. Now they went their seperate ways, found a land each to conquer and fortify. And began to build armies of their own. The entire Earth was against them at first, but slowly they found a way to turn the humans to their side. It meant perverting them, changing them. Turning them into monster. Orcs, some called them. They killed humans, and for the first time the Squid God felt slight concern. He'd thought it would just be a matter of hunting down each New God and killing them. But now they were becomine a genuine threat for them.
Over the years new New Gods were born too, as sometimes they would travel to each other's domain and breed. It was incest, of course, but that did not matter to them. More New Gods did not necessarily mean more trouble for the Squid God, however, as the New Gods began feuding with each other, battling over land. They ever began to war with and kill each other. This pleased the Squid God.
But the Lobstrosity and the Dread Dragon were still serious threats, and they formed and alliance and recruited some other powerful Gods to launch a full scale war on the Squid God's domain. They laid siege to it, but could never break into the Squid God's mountain. Eventually the Squid God grew bored and decided to test himself. What kind of a God was he anyway? He challenged the Lobstrosity to single combat. The Dread Dragon pleaded with his ally not to fight, but this merely made the Lobstrosity want to fight more, to prove himself.
The Squid God slaughtered him in seconds.
The alliance fell apart after that. The New Gods spread and most abandoned plans to fight the Squid God. But the Dread Dragon still had plans. It knew they would take time.
It occared to the Squid God that this was a cycle. That history was repeating, that it was like the ancient times when he had walked the Earth with other Gods like the Starwhale and the Time Demon. But he'd killed all them and he'd kill these God too, leaving nobody. He'd break the cycle by killing them all.

There were still humans, even after thousands of years of war between the Gods. They found that the Gods paid them less attention as they warred. They heard a legend, a rumour, that a woman lived on top of the Squid God's mountain, imprisoned. The legend said she had known the Squid God in the past and knew how to defeat him. Hundreds of humans tried to scale the mountain. Most died. But eventually a group of five got to the top...
The found a woman there, impaled on the mountain, and she looked sad.
"How long has it been?" she asked. "Since this mountain rose?"
"The mountain has always been here," said the human. "The Squid God has always ruled the world." As far as he knew, this was the truth. Chloe sighed sadly.
"Take me down," she said. "Please. It's time I did something again."
They managed to pull Chloe out of the mountain. It was impossible that she lived through this, yet she did, and seemingly felt no pain. They took her down. The Squid God did not notice. In truth he had forgotten Chloe long ago. She still occupied a small space in his mind, yes, but he'd never give thought to her or to ever checking to see if she still lived on the mountain.
Centuries passed. The Squid God lived in his mountain content, waiting for the New Gods to kill each other. They still warred and he'd ever turned some of them to his side, through ink and promises of power. They made sure to stoke the flames of war. More New Gods were dying than being born. The Squid God knew one day he'd win.
What he didn't know was not on an island that had once been known as Britain, the human race still lived. All that were human had travelled there and though their number was less than a million they had a powerful leader. Chloe. She taught them that there was always hope. She told them that her future self had told her that one day she would win, that the Squid God (oddly she called Him "The Squidinator" at times) would fall. That light would return to the world.
The people worshipped her as a Goddess and she gave them her love and Britain grew strong again.
But a spy of the Squid God found out.

The Squidinator was almost amused to hear that the humans still lived. He dismissed his spy's report, knowing he could kill them with a thought. But he did leave his mountain for the first time in many years, to survey his domain, to make sure the humans did not yet have wizards and none had attempted to enter his land.
It was then that the Dread Dragon attacked. It had been waiting on top of his mountain for a thousand years for this opportunity.
The fight was not like the one with the Lobstrosity. It lasted weeks. The Dread Dragon tried to melt the Squid God. He was burned badly. But the flames never burnt through. And eventually the Dread Dragon was exhausted.
"Did you really think you could beat me?" asked the Squid God, amused. He snapped the Dread Dragon's neck then took its power for himself. The power of flight and flame. And then he went to Britain.
The Dread Dragon attacked had reminded the Squid God that threats could still come, event after ruling the Earth for a million years. If he did not kill the humans now they would eventually become wizards and imprison him again.
He burned their land, their cities, their children. He burned them all. And he knew that the one who sat in a castle was Chloe. He melted her too. Finally he was strong enough to kill her. He stood in the place she'd once lived. She was gone.
And yet he could hear her voice still.
"You can melt me but I can't die," she said. "I'll always be here. You have nothing to say, then? After all these years? Remember when you promised me that you'd send the spacehip to a new planet? That you'd let those people live? You broke your promise, moonster. You're not even good to your word."
He burned more and more. He burned the whole island away. But still he heard her voice.
"Monster," she repeated.
He flew home and decided to never leave his mountain again.

His spies brought him word that a forest grew where Chloe had once lived. That humans, mutated orcs, other strange creatures would travel their. That one of the New Gods lived in that land. They said they need the Squidinator to use the flames it had took from the Dread Dragon to cleanse that land. But the Squid God did not want to leave again. It told them to wait.
He thought of destroying the Earth and going to another planet, a place where Chloe's spirit would not live. But he didn't want to leave home.
Millions of years went by. The Squid God passed almost into legend. Nobody would enter his land, but they did not fear him anymore. Races of men, dwarves, elves, orcs, even dragons lived in the world. But their was also a dark cult dedicated to the Squid God. There were still ink-eyed monsters too. War still raged inthe world. And Chloe's voice still spoke of hope.
He heard her in his dreams calling him a monster.
One day he looked out into the world through the eyes of his remaining slaves. How had it come to this? How had he stopped caring? Was it possible that he'd killed enough? Killing more did not seem like it would make a difference, not now. Unless he could kill them all at once.
A plague. He created one in his stomach and sent it out through the air. He felt it kill millions. It made him feel happy, briefly. He even masturbated for the first time in a million years.
But still some survived. He could feel a great life in the place where he'd once spoke to Chloe. He returned there, he could stll fly.
It was an empty land now, all who lived their hand died in the plague. He could not hear Chlos' voice. Perhaps she was finally gone...
He saw a unicorn in a forest. It stared at him with sad eyes.
He knew Chloe had been reborn.
He tried to burn her, knowing it would not work. The flames passed around her. She just kept looking at him. With those eyes.
He went back to his mountain and back to sleep.
