I want to smell dark matter
He walked and walked and walked. His feet bled but he didn't feel it. The squidgod was driving now. He hungered for the mountain. He could feel that the squidgod was please he had given in. He held a little part of his brain to himself though. Just a single thought. I'm still human, he thought. I'm still human.
He knew it was a lie. He was just a memory now, a memory living inside the squidgod. But it was a lie he had to tell himself. It was a lie which lived.
He reached the mountain at last. He looked up at it again, as it stood before him impossibly high. He remembered being the squidgod and lying on top of it, surveying his land. All lay dead before him. The squid part of him wanted badly for that to happen again.
Then, suddenly, he was flying.
He hadn't known he could do it. Of course he'd been able to when he'd been the squidgod, but that was long ago and part of him wasn't alive then. Being so close to the mountain had allowed him to do it again. Then he was on top of the mountain, high in the clouds, the roof of the world. He gazed down for a while, then saw something close to him. A pool of water. He gazed into it...and saw the squidgod gazing back.
"Finally, I am home," it said.
"How are you doing this?" asked the Squidinator. It had never been able to talk to him in words before, only emotions.
"I am home, I am more alive than ever," it said. "Do you remember now how you became me?"
"Of course," he said. "When I saw in the news that the temple had been found, a vision came to me in my head. A vision of power. I wanted it. I was at my lowest point...and you reached out to me."
"You were the closest mind that I felt was suitable," it said. "You lived not far from the temple. I felt you with my mind tentacles. I called you to me."
"I want to come!" he laughed. "I wanted you to consume me. I wanted to die. I wanted to kill."
"Then you see how right it is that you let me have control now," it said.
"I remember the reverse chanting, freeing you, after I dived in...you had control then..."
"Not really. It was like being born again in a new body. A small, human body. I couldn't remember what I'd been at first. I desired human flesh. I slept with them, killed them, tortured them...but soon I began to remember I'd once been much more than that."
"And my human half came back..."
"Much less than a half, but yes. I was still inside your body. I couldn't carve away all your thoughts. But now, on the mountain, I can do it. I can live again."
"And I'll die?"
"You don't have to. I can keep something of you in my mind. You helped me when I needed helping. I will repay that debt. One day I may discover a way to give you your own body again."
"But you'll be what you once were?"
"This mountain contains enough of my power to restore my old body, yes."
"I have to do it though, don't I? You would have done it yourself if you could..."
"I'm still not fully here, more of a memory..."
"That's what I am," said the Squidinator, as he thought about how he was human again.
"I'm a greater memory than you," it said. "But yes, I need you to tap into the moutain's power."
"And if I don't?"
"Why did you come here if not to do that?"
"I don't know..."
"What are you thinking? Still that you can save the humans? They are broken! Their brains have been changed and they cannot change back. There is nothing you can do for them. They'll all die soon enough anyway. The world of mortals is gone. Now is the time of the Gods."
"What if...I DESTROY YOU!" And the Squidinator threw himself against the mountain. He pressed against it, trying to feel its power, trying to erase the squidgod and turn himself human. Nothing happened.
"You didn't really think that would work, did you?"
"No, not really. But I had to try. For her."
"She can't be saved. I will born her and all humans."
"Not really selling me on the idea of letting you return..."
"You will find there is no choice. In time the human part of you will die away, as all humans do. Only I will remain. Then I shall have the power."
"Then why are you trying to force me to do it now? You waited under the ground for millions of years. You can wait a while longer."
And the Squidinator turned away from the pool and sat down on the mountain. He didn't know what he was going to do now. He watched the world for a while. Then he heard something, from far below.
Chanting.
He knew it was a lie. He was just a memory now, a memory living inside the squidgod. But it was a lie he had to tell himself. It was a lie which lived.
