I want to smell dark matter
Chloe told the Squidinator everything that had happened in the hundred and fourteen years since he'd last walked the Earth. Well, she summarised it anyway. He heard how he'd been recuded to legend. That the official story was just that a terrible plague had broken out and killed millions and driven the rest mad for a time. He didn't know what he'd expected to hear, but he found this somewhat disappointing.
"So no one knows the truth," he said.
"Not quite," she said. "On the web there are many many people who worship you. And of course there's the Squid Bible."
"The what?"
"It started out with an account by a man and woman. They claimed to have been among those who imprisoned you by chanting."
"Ah, them. I always wondered what happened to them after I was gone."
"They say God chose them to imprison you."
"What! No! I chose them!"
"Same thing..."
"I'm not God, Chloe."
"No...you're real."
"So these cultists believe that I was an evil force defeated by God?"
"Not all of them...I didn't tell you about the Book of Lisa. That's part of the Squid Bible too..."
"Lisa? My Lisa?"
"She...claims to have been a disciple of yours. That you were a man once. That you were chosen for power, to make the world a better place. That humanity rejected your gift and went to war. She puts the blame firmly on us."
"So her mind...it did not return to normal like everyone else's. I touched her so that she remained crazy forever..."
"Crazy? Or telling the truth!"
"Crazy, Chloe. I never attempt to unite the world in peace. Not the last time. This time I will. I just need time to plan."
"Do you want to come and live in my bedroom until then? I don't let my mum come in anyway."
"Uhh...sure." And so they went, to Chloe's house. Of course it was not the same town he had once lived in, where he and Lisa had briefly stayed together. It had been one hundred and fourteen years. Old houses were gone. New structures, new borders had risen. But it almost felt the same. He felt so bad for Lisa. The one person he hadn't wanted to drive insane had ended up craziest of them all. "What happened to Lisa after she wrote the book?"
"Why do you care so much about her?" asked Chloe, not even attempting to hide her jealousy of a dead woman.
"Please answer me."
"I don't know. No one does. She wrote that one book but nothing more."
"Then I'll never know."
"Guess not. " They were in Chloe's bedroom now. He looked around. He saw a drawing on a desk. A drawing of a mansquid. It was not quite like him, but it was remarkable. "I dreamed of you often."
"There is something special about you, Chloe," he said, reaching out to her. He stroked the side of her face. He felt a sudden urge to release ink over her. He thought it down. He did not want to ruin her like he had Lisa.
"Are you sure you don't want to have sex with me?" she said. He wasn't sure at all.
"It would be wrong," he said. "I'd probably get ink on you." She laughed, even though that hadn't been a joke.
He settled down on her bed as she went downstairs to explain where she'd been to her mother. This was his new home now.
So why we he thinking of his mountain?
