I want to smell dark matter
The Earth lost consciousness. Everything was black. Like ink. No, just black. Like the hole he'd been in once. He. He was a he. He remembered that. It had been so long ago. He'd never seen the blackness refectled in space. There had always been stars. It had been true blackness. Alone with that voice. Alone with the Squidgod. He remembered it all now. How he'd given in. How he'd climbed out of the hole as soon as she'd seen a pretty face. Chloe. Was she still sitting by his side? He hadn't even checked on her lately. He'd been so busy. What was happening again? Oh yes, he was dying. The Starwhale and the spacehsip had struck a mortal blow. He wanted to laugh, but he had no mouth. Was he fading away? Was this his last thought? Wasn't life supposed to flash before his eyes? All he could remember was the hole. He wasn't born in the hole. He tried to go back further. When he's ruled the world. Hadn't he? Another girl. He was ashamed he couldnl't remmeber her name. People brining him...cheese? Why had that been? They had brought him cheese. Then he imagined himself as Chloe, drawn to the Squidgod's prsion. No, he had done that himself. Not Chloe. He'd chosed to let the Squidgod enter him. He'd willfully set down this path...he remembered his mountain...
"Finally, you let me out," said the voice of the Squidgod.
"You're still in me?" asked the Earth.
"I was always here. I'm a part of you. Always."
"I know. I always knew. I'm so many people."
"You're just one now."
"And I'm dying."
"Yes."
"Bummer."
"You made your choice. It was partly my fault. I always wanted to kill that Starwhale..."
"Well I did infect its cities with the ink virus. I think I might have crippled it badly. Maybe even killed it."
"That's something then."
"Not enough. I wanted to live forever."
"I guess you should wake up so you can die."
"Yes. I guess."
He woke up. He was spinning through space. There was a massive crack in him from where the Starwhale's tail had hit. He could see the Starwhale in the distance. It was in spasms. It was as badly hurt as him. He could feel that some of the spacemen were still alive, hunting down and killing his ink slaves. Why bother, he wondered. Finally he turned his massive eyes to Chloe. She was cacooned in rock. He'd done that, instinctively, to protect her. There were no spacemen free, so he let her out.
"Master, what has happened?" she asked, looking worried.
"I free you from this parody of a life," he said. And all the ink drained from her eyes. And she was human again.
She screamed in horror.
"Yes, I thought you might do that," he sad.
"What...how did I get here? No...oh no. That couldn't have been year. All these years...how could you? How could you?"
"I'm...I'm sorry."
"Take me home, take me home..."
"This is your home. This is Earth. I am Earth."
"You were...you were smaller."
"I'm everything now."
"My mother?"
"She was consumed."
"No...fuck you fuck you FUCK YOU!!"
She couldn't handle it. She must have remembered it all, everything she'd done as a slave. He was a monster.
"Hello," came another voice. One he'd never heard before. He turned his massive eyes away from Chloe, who was now rocking back and forward on the ground. "I think we may have things worth discussing."
It was a human-sized being, but it was not human.
It was the Time Demon.
