I want to smell dark matter
He swam. He swam beyond all reason. He swam all over the world. There was only one ocea, of course. It was all connected. He covered it all. He went as deep as the water did. He saw strange things, but not the things from his memories. He searched them. They were so faded. Images, shadows...a portal. But before the portal there was...something. He asked whales if they knew anything. They said no.
He rested at the bottom of the ocean for a while. Sent out ink-feelers for information. None came. He was alone, on the bottom of the ocean...
Maybe that was the problem. He was trying to go deep, find hidden paths. Maybe he was thinking too literally. In his mind the portal wasn't deep, it was in the open water. It wasn't about finding the portal physically. He had to find it in his mind.
He swam and searched his memories at the same time. He tried to recall everything. He remembered the exact way he'd been swimming when he'd entered the portal. And then...the colours. Oh the colours. That was what he hadn't remembered before. But were the colours before the portal or after? It was strange that he coulnd't tell...
And just like that he was dreaming as he swam. He could see the portal more clearly now. He was swimming through it. Was this a memory or a vision of the future? What was strange is that he could see himself swimming by his own side as he entered. Was that his past self? Or was it a reflection? Or was it him, swimming through right now, while the other him dreamed...had it all been a dream? Had he been in the portal all along?
He woke up and found he was swimming through space.
He remembered this. Why hadn't he remebered it before? It seemed you had to be on the path to the portal to remember the portal...
The stars started streaming by. They were just light now. Everything was light. And colours.
"How long have I been in here?" he asked.
"Time doesn't exist here," said a voice. His own voice.
"I'm talking to myself from the past," he said.
"That's right," he said.
"What's why I couldn't remember..."
"It's a paradox."
"The Time Demon would hate it."
"Beware the Time Demon. His part is not over yet."
"Did he get his power here too?"
"This is the source. The centre of the universe. Everything comes from here, all life, all power...yes."
"I don't know why I came back..."
"Because instinctively you remembered this conversation happening and knew it had to happen again from the other side, so the universe would make sense."
"But you planned this. I planned this. Planned that one day I'd return...for more power."
"That's right."
"And why do you sound as I am now? You were...I was just the Squidgod then. With no human in me."
"Or so you remember. Perhaps your origin isn't the way you recall."
"I don't understand yet."
"Exactly."
"Just...just give me the power."
"You are swimming in it."
"And what will I do with it?"
"You'll know when you go back. You've swam these waters twice now. No other being has. You can do things others cannot imagine. But will you? WILL YOu."
And then his past self leapt from the colours, and it was wild, a beast...and it leapt into him. He laughed. He understood. He was so large now. The source itself was nothing. The universe was nothing. He was everywhere at once, he knew everything....
He knew everything was going to end. Unless...he could make a new universe.
Not yet. He had to leave. He had to go back to Earth. That was where his destiny lived...
How long had he been away?
And was his mountain still there.
