I want to smell dark matter
Unit 47 continued to drill. The unusual readings were only getting stronger, but were still not at a level where she could stop drilling. Her programming would not allow it. She was also aware that the deeper she drilled, the greater the risk of catastrophic system failure. But she knew her creator Doctor Hunt would not let that happen. She continued to drill. The readings were definite now. There was a time anomoly beneath them.
"REPORT," said Unit 47. The soothing voice of Doctor Hunt replied.
"Yes, Unit," she said. "Report!" She could not hide her excitement.
"Am now 100% certan that time anomoly lies beneath me. Am approaching limits of operating capacity."
"This is it. Finally. After all these years of searching...I've done. WE have done it. Do you feel proud, Unit 47?"
"Am not capable of feeling emotions, Doctor," said Unit 47. But there was...something. A...satisfaction? She often experienced it now after completely a task. Her circuits seemed to whirr in a pleasant way. She found herself running more smoothly. Was this an emotion? A feeling? Was she...alive.
"So you claim," laughed Hunt. "Continue drilling."
"Doctor, any further drilling will begin to damage my systems."
"But we're so close. What if the anomoly moves? If you can just give me a little more..."
"Mathematically I can only give so much..."
"Please, push yourself! We need this."
"You are mistaking me for a human again." This happened sometimes.
"Damn it, I order you to continue drilling!"
"Yes, doctor." Unit 47 felt something else now. Sadness?
"I'm sorry, Unit 47," said Hunt. "I'm sure you can do it. I'll recall you as soon as you find the anomoly."
The drilling continued. Unit 47 could feel the anomoly now. The readings were off the chart. Unit 47's systems started to fail. But she could not stop. Not without an order from Hunt. She sent all the system information to Hunt but received no orders.
Unit 47 died just as she picked up the first image of the anomoly.
Hunt felt sad that Unit 47 had died, but readied Unit 48 to send down the hole. They were so close now. It had taken 47 robots, yes, but it was worth it. it would all be worth.
Suddenly a man was standing in her lab. She jumped back, startled.
"Who are you, how did you get in here!?" she asked.
"You've found something human eyes are not supposed to see," said the man. There was something very unusual about him.
"Are you...fromt the past?" He laughed.
"In a way. I did not come from that anomoly, but I have been seraching for it too, or something like it. I watched your work. I knew you'd get there eventually."
"We can...I can work with you..."
"No."
"What are you going to do to me?"
"I'm sorry," said the Squidinator. "Your existence is at an end." At that moment a robot with "47" written on it attacked. The Squidinator was amused, briefly, then turned the robot to dust. Hunt had tried running for the door. The Squidinator sighed and turned her to dust too. She'd had a brilliant mind. An earlier version of him would have let her live. But he was beyond humanity now. They would all be dead soon.
The Squidinator dived down the hole.
