I want to smell dark matter
Chloe had not been able to understand what was happening in the Source. She'd felt herself fading, felt like she was nothing compared to the being that surrounded her. Then the Squidinator had held her tight and she'd come back to herself, and the Source was disappearing and the voices were silence...exept one. She heard a voice from the Source she hadn't heard before.
Her own.
And it said to her "Don't give up. You will beat him in the end. It might not seem like it. But you must retain hope."
How could she be in the Source?
She was out of it now. She'd never know. She was back on Earth, somehow. They hadn't come out where they'd gone in. They were in a field, somewhere. She thought for a moment it might be the place she'd once lived, the place where the Squidinator had been entombed...
He wasn't the Squidinator anymore. He was the Squid God again now and she was scared. Looking at him, she couldn't imagine ever having hope again. He was terrifying. A monster, like he'd never been before. Her eyes could barely make sense of him at first. She could barely tell how big he was. It was like he was both in and out of the dimesion. Yet the longer she looked the more clear it became that there was nothing human in him.
"HOW DO YOU LIKE MY NEW LOOK, CHLOE?" he asked.
"Why?" was all she could think to say.
"IT'S BETTER TO RULE THE UNIVERSE AS ITS PHYSICAL GOD KING THAN TO BE NOTHING IN HEAVEN," he said.
"Are you going to kill me now?" she asked, not scared. She didn't exactly want to die, but she did want an answer.
"OH, THERE'S NO KILLING YOU. BUT THAT DOESN'T MATTER, YOU'RE IRRELEVANT. BUT LET ME SHOW YOU WHAT I CAN DO, YOU, MY LONGEST SERVING DISCIPLE."
"I'm not..." But already she felt his terrible mind link with hers.
"I CAN BE ANYWHERE NOW, ANYWHERE IN THIS UNIVERSE," he said. He reached out. He was searching for other life. For threats. But he already knew all the other Gods were in the Source. He felt the Starbrood living on the moon and dismissed them. They were nothing, no threat at all. He moved further into space. Out of the solar system, out of the galaxy, into others. The only life he found was bacteria. Nothing...until there was one planet. In a dstant galaxy. The life on it was nothing humans would have recognised. Yet it was intelligent. It could think...
He threw that planet into its own sun.
Chloe came back abruptly. "No!" she cried. "No!"
"YES."
"That wasn't real, you were just imagining, you wouldn't..."
"EARTH WILL BE THE ONLY PLANE WITH INTELLIGENT LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE. AND ALL THAT LIFE WILL WORSHIP ME, FOREVER AND EVER."
"You...you'll get bored!" That was all she could think of. She'd gotten board, after all, her immortality was nothing compared to his.
"I CAN EXPERIENCE ANY SENSATION AT ANY TIME, LIVE IN MY GREAT MIND ANY LIFE I CHOOSE...NO, I WILL NOT GET BORED."
"Let the people live. They will worship you, yes, but you don't have to hurt them to make that happen..."
"BUT THEY NEED TO BE MADE AWARE." He linked their minds again to show him send out an ink plague that killed five hundred million people in an instant.
Chloe just stood there, trying to comprehend. She didn't know how much worse it could get. How much more bleak. She tried to have hope. If she had been in the Source, what did that mean? That she would return there someday? She understood the Source thanks to touching the Squid God's mind. Maybe it hadn't truly been her voice, but just one of the other Gods trying to convince her to fight. A last desperate gambit. She didn't know. But she had made a decision. She would fight him.
"I'll be here with you all along, reminding you what you are," she said. "I'll never let you forget that you were once a pathetic man who..."
She felt something stab into her. She looked down. It had come from the ground. A jagged rock. It was rising. It impaled her. She was rising up high...
He was bringing back his moutain.
She tried to scrambled off, but another tagged section of rock went right through her side. She was on the peak of the mountain impaled there as it rose high into the sky. It had once been the highest mountain the world had ever seen. She could see a city beneath her, already badly damaged by the Starbrood's earthquakes. It was completely levelled by the mountain. It was so massive, so big. She was high in the clouds now. Immortal and trapped. Forever.
"UPON THIS ROCK I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH," said the Squid God.
Her own.
And it said to her "Don't give up. You will beat him in the end. It might not seem like it. But you must retain hope."
