Things you love about Star Wars

Star Wars (later retitled Episode IV: A New Hope) begins with a spectacular space battle. As a child I'd never seen anything like this before. I'd maybe seen other science fiction type movies, but none were as convinci9ng on or this kind of scale. The big ship swallows up the little one, VADER appears, the Princess is captured...but that's not what I remember the most from watching as a child. The movie follows the two droids, R2 and 3PO, as they escape the ship and land on the planet below. But they don't just rush to the next plot point. There's a whole sequence of the droids splitting up, getting lost in the desert, and getting captured by Jawas before we finally see Luke for the first time. THAT'S what made me Star Wars crazy: these two droids wandering around in this big, lived-in world. It was so weird, so alien, and so easy to believe in. When 3PO finds R2 again I was hugely relieved, even though they'd only been apart for a couple of minutes:

I can't imagine a big blockbuster movie today starting with such a weird sequence. Okay, yeah, it probably isn't as crazy as my childhood memory of it, but taking a detour like that still feels really different (and dare I say BRAVE.)
