To tip or not to tip...

I'm moving and I just had cable installed and got the carpets cleaned so my question is, should I have tipped the cable guy or the carpet cleaner? I didn't and I'll feel bad if I should have but I will remember that for next time.

I divide things into 2 catagories.

Home repair/maintenance - anything to do with general maintenance to house or home. Can include lawn care/grounds keeping, painting, plumbing, electrical or structural work done by a contracted service provider, no tip.

Personal services - Can include dry cleaning delivery, newspaper, resturant delivery, grocery, packages (Fedex, UPS) or one time things like the kid next door mowing the lawn, I tip.

Exceptions, USPS and trash collection, tips and cards around the holidays.

The UPS guy makes too much money to be tipped. I give them bottles of water in the summer, thats about as far as it goes.

A lot of them are lazy. If the person actually delivers the package to the door, I'll tip. But experience says they just drop the item in the driveway by the garage anyways. ;)

No tips for non service folks, like installers and delivery guys from parcel systems. Anything involving service however, like take out delivery is tipped.

It cost me $100 to have the cable guy come out here and install my cable. No tip. However, I do firmly believe in Boxing Day.
