Tom Brady says he is retiring from football 'for good'

Tom Brady says he is retiring "for good" from football, ending a storied 23-year NFL career during which the star quarterback won seven Super Bowls and set numerous records. Brady, 45, also announced he was retiring on Feb. 1, 2022, before changing his mind 40 days later and returning to play this past season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Glazer family, which owns the Buccaneers, said in a statement that Brady "set an exceptional standard that elevated our entire organization to new heights and created some of the most iconic moments in our history.

Brady, who won six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and one with the Buccaneers, ends his career as the NFL's leader in career passing yards (89,214) and touchdown passes (649). The three-time league MVP passed for 4,694 yards -- third most in the NFL -- and 25 touchdowns this past season, his third with Tampa Bay. Brady is the only player to win more than five Super Bowls and has been named Super Bowl MVP five times.

Brady can immediately begin working as an analyst for Fox Sports, which signed him to a 10-year, $375 million contract this past summer. He also launched a Brady brand clothing line one year ago, has a successful health and wellness brand called TB12 Sports and founded his own production company, 199 Productions. Brady and supermodel Gisele Bundchen finalized their divorce this past fall, during the Bucs' season. It ended a 13-year marriage between two superstars who respectively reached the pinnacles of football and fashion.

HE'S NOT GOING anywhere.That's the thing to remember about Tom Brady, now that he's retired for good, one year to the day after he retired for six weeks. And it should come as no surprise. He's never gone anywhere, except back to the game. He's retiring to the booth, retiring from football by staying in football. His presence will loom over the game, as it has for a generation, thanks to the 10-year contract he signed with Fox to broadcast games and to be a company "ambassador." In the booth he has pledged to be a different Brady than the one we've known, which is to say that he'll be brutally honest about what he sees below. As an ambassador, he'll be the exact Tom Brady that we've known, which is to say that he'll be an icon with ultimate leverage, a man who after 22 years of professional football answers to nobody but himself.

Tom Brady retires as GOAT in fantasy and betting, too​


As the sports world react to the news of Tom Brady's retirement, we asked David Purdum and Tristan H. Cockcroft to put into context what Brady meant to fantasy players and sports bettors over the past two decades. For as many wins as Brady had on the field, and Super Bowl rings on his fingers, he's had a part in countless fantasy football championships while helping those who bet on him at sportsbooks win more often than not. Tom Brady covered the spread in more regular-season games -- 190 -- than any other quarterback in the Super Bowl era. Sources: Tom Brady files retirement letter to NFL, NFLPA​


Former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady filed paperwork with the NFL and NFL Players Association on Friday to confirm his Feb. 1 retirement, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The letter -- which begins processing NFLPA benefits -- silences any questions about a potential return and makes him eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2028. The fact that this move happened Friday means the Bucs will take the brunt of his $35 million in salary cap dead money in 2023 versus being able to divide it between 2023 and 2024 if they had altered the voidable years in his contract and then waited until after June 1 to process the retirement.

Patriots to honor Tom Brady at 2023 home opener​


New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft announced Thursday morning that Tom Brady will be honored at the team's 2023 home opener. "I invited him back to be with us at the opening game and let the fans in New England thank him ... it will be the beginning of many celebrations to honor Tom Brady," Kraft said on NFL Network.

Brady spent his first 20 seasons in New England (2000-2019), winning six Super Bowls, before concluding his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2020-2022) and winning a seventh title. He is the only player to win more than five Super Bowls in his career, and he has been named Super Bowl MVP five times.

Brady ended his career as the NFL's leader in career passing yards (89,214) and touchdown passes (649). The three-time league MVP passed for 4,694 yards -- third most in the NFL -- and 25 touchdowns this past season. He also holds NFL records for regular-season wins (251), Super Bowl appearances (10), playoff games (48) and wins (35), as well as playoff yards (13,400) and TDs (88).

Sources: Tom Brady in talks to become limited Raiders partner​


NFL legend Tom Brady is in deep discussions to become a limited partner of the Las Vegas Raiders, sources told ESPN -- potentially his second foray into a partnership with Raiders owner Mark Davis on a professional sports franchise in less than two months. In late March, Brady announced that he had purchased a stake in the WNBA's Las Vegas Aces, a team also primarily owned by Davis. Even if Brady and Davis are able to agree to terms, at least 24 current team owners would have to vet and approve Brady's limited partnership, as is the case with all minority and majority owners. It's believed that Brady's 10-year, $375 million contract with Fox, which is due to start in 2024, would be unaffected by an investment in the Raiders. A source told ESPN that Fox has "blessed" the arrangement.

Tom Brady certain he's retired, 'dream' to buy into Raiders​


Tom Brady reiterated Thursday that he has no plans to play in the NFL again after retiring in February, but he hopes agreeing to buy into the Las Vegas Raiders will allow him to be involved in the league for the rest of his life. "I'm certain I'm not playing again, so I've tried to make that clear and I hate to continue to profess that, cause I've already told people that lots of times," Brady told Sports Illustrated in response to a question about fans and media who continue to come up with scenarios where he might return to the field. Brady retired in February last year but reversed course after 41 days to return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a third season. If he ever decided he wanted to play for the Raiders, as an owner, a dual role with the franchise would have to be approved by NFL owners.

Report: Tom Brady lost $30M in collapse of crypto giant FTX​


Tom Brady lost millions in the collapse of cryptocurrency company FTX, for which he served as an "ambassador," The New York Times reported Friday. Under an agreement the retired NFL quarterback made with FTX in 2021, he received $30 million in now-worthless stock for his work pitching the company in television ads and at its conference. In step with him at the time was his then-wife, Gisele Bundchen, who received $18 million in stock, per the report. Brady, 45, ranked No. 50 on Forbes' 2023 list of the world's highest-paid athletes with earnings of $45.2 million in football salary and endorsements.

WNBA officially approves Tom Brady's ownership stake in Aces​


The WNBA's owners officially approved retired quarterback Tom Brady's bid Monday to purchase a stake in the Las Vegas Aces. Brady and the Aces announced March 23 he purchased a minority share in the club, but no specific information was provided. League approval appeared to be a formality because WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert issued a statement praising the acquisition. Las Vegas hopes to repeat its league championship when the Aces open a best-of-five series Sunday against the New York Liberty. Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis is the Aces' majority owner. Brady, who won six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, attended an Aces game on May 31, 2022, and later sent Las Vegas star Kelsey Plum a jersey and other gifts.

Tom Brady bemoans NFL play, says 'there's a lot of mediocrity'​


Less than a year removed from his legendary playing career, Tom Brady evidently is not impressed with the current level of play in the NFL. "I think there's a lot of mediocrity in today's NFL. I don't see the excellence that I saw in the past," Brady said during an appearance Monday on "The Stephen A. Smith Show." Brady, who retired earlier this year after a record-setting 23-year carreer, cited numerous reasons for his evaluation of the game, including coaching and player development. "I think the coaching isn't as good as it was," Brady said. "I don't think the development of young players is as good as it was. I don't think the schemes are as good as they were. Scoring in the NFL has declined for the fourth consecutive season in 2023; teams are combining to score just 43.3 points per game, down from 43.8 last season and 45.9 in 2021. The league is on pace for its lowest-scoring season on average since 2009, when teams combined for 42.9 points per game.

Brady, 46, is the NFL's all-time leader in passing yards and touchdown passes. The seven-time Super Bowl champion and three-time league MVP said he doesn't think "the athletes have changed much" since he started his NFL career in 2000, pointing instead to development at the college level. "I actually think college players were better prepared when I came out than they are now," he said. "Just because so many coaches are changing programs, and I would say there's not even a lot of college programs anymore. There's a lot of college teams, but not programs that are developing players.

NFL legend Tom Brady was "a little" critical of New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones while speaking on a panel at Fanatics Fest on Friday at the Javits Center. "I didn't mean to say it like that. I wasn't even being critical of Daniel Jones," he said. "Maybe I was a little." Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl winner for the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is set to begin this season as the lead analyst for Fox. He is slated to work alongside lead play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt. Smith and Brady were discussing how the NFL legend was going to be careful of being overly critical of quarterbacks while broadcasting games.
