Tyreek Hill is detained by police before Dolphins game. Officer is subsequently placed on leave

Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins was handcuffed and placed face down on a street outside the team’s stadium after he was stopped for speeding and reckless driving Sunday morning before the Dolphins' first game of the season, an incident that left the star wide receiver baffled and resulted in a police officer being placed on administrative leave. The officer, who was not identified, was one of at least three involved in detaining Hill. Some fans saw Hill being handcuffed and captured video on their way to the game, and it quickly went on social media. Miami-Dade Police director Stephanie V. Daniels said she had launched an internal affairs investigation. Told after the game that the officer was placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation, Hill said: “That should tell you everything you need to know.” Added defensive tackle Calais Campbell, who was also briefly handcuffed after coming to his teammate’s aid: “That makes sense based on the situation.” Hill, who said he respects police officers and wants to be one when he retires from football, said he “had no idea” why police placed him in handcuffs. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league has been in contact with the Dolphins about Sunday’s incident, but declined to comment further. Hill, who is Black, said he didn’t want to use his celebrity to get out of the situation but wondered what would’ve happened if he weren’t an NFL star.

Tyreek Hill fears he could have been shot in 'worst-case scenario' during police stop outside stadium

Tyreek Hill believes that if he weren't a famous football player, officers may have shot or arrested him during a police confrontation that "went from 0 to 60," the Dolphins star said Monday. The wide receiver was driving to the Dolphins-Jacksonville Jaguars game on Sunday when Miami-Dade police stopped him just outside Hard Rock Stadium, handcuffed him and put him face down on the pavement. "If I wasn't Tyreek Hill, Lord knows, I probably would have been, like, worst-case scenario, I would have been shot or would have been locked up" and "put behind bars, you know, for a simple speeding ticket," Hill told NBC News. The Miami-Dade Police Department has launched an internal affairs investigation, and at least one officer has been taken off the streets in the wake of the confrontation, which was captured on video that has been widely shared on social media. Hill insists he was cooperative with police, rolling down his window and giving his identification. He said he was in no rush because he was within the shadows of Hard Rock Stadium and had no reason to be anxious or in a hurry. A representative for the police union said Hill was at fault for not being “immediately” cooperative with officers. The police department declined to comment on the union’s account, saying police officials must wait until the internal affairs investigation is completed before they publicly discuss the incident.

Tyreek Hill 'still trying' to process pregame detainment by police

Multiple Dolphins players were detained by Miami-Dade Police Department officers before Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, including All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill said he was pulled over for allegedly speeding while driving to Hard Rock Stadium, roughly three hours before the game kicked off. He was ultimately placed in handcuffs after a "verbal altercation" occurred, sources told ESPN's Jeff Darlington. Hill was cited for reckless driving, sources told Darlington. He was released after several minutes, but the incident was filmed by nearby fans and quickly went viral on social media. Hill said he didn't know why the situation escalated the way it did.

What we know about the police detention of Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill

It’s been an eventful few days for Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill, who was handcuffed and detained by Miami-Dade Police shortly before his team’s opening game Sunday. The detention was just temporary, and Hill later scored a stellar 80-yard touchdown in a close win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. He celebrated the score by putting his arms behind his back with his wrists together – a cheeky nod to his pregame incident. But off the field, the detention – as well as police interactions with two other Dolphins players – has led to a public back-and-forth between the NFL team and local police and has renewed the debate over how law enforcement handles traffic stops and interacts with members of the public.

On Monday night, police released nearly two hours of body-camera footage showing the interaction with Hill and other Dolphins players at the scene. A police union criticized Hill as “uncooperative.” Attorneys for one officer, who was placed on administrative duties amid a review, called the decision “premature” and called for the officer’s immediate reinstatement. In turn, the Dolphins organization released a statement criticizing the officers’ conduct, and Hill’s agent called on the officers to be fired. Hill told CNN he remained confused by the encounter. “I’m still kind of shell-shocked from it,” Hill said. “I’m embarrassed.”

Police officer who pulled over Tyreek Hill had "Bills Mafia' as his Linkedin background
Following the Sept. 9 release of bodycam footage from several officers involved in the incident, online sleuths claimed to have identified the officer — matching the name Manuel Batista — on LinkedIn, based on a name tag seen in the footage. A person with that name and the above profile picture did once have a LinkedIn profile with the same details as seen in the viral screenshot, but it did not contain any Buffalo Bills related imagery.

Police launch review after NFL player Hill detained
In a statement, Miami-Dade Police Department director Stephanie V Daniels said: "I initiated an internal affairs investigation to ensure a thorough review of the matter. "One of the officers involved in the incident has been placed on administrative duties while the investigation is conducted. "I'm committed to transparency and accountability to the community with any situation involving my officers."

Tyreek Hill says he could have handled his traffic stop better but he still wants the officer fired

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill acknowledged Wednesday that he could have handled himself better in the initial moments of a weekend traffick stop that left him handcuffed and pulled out of his car by police officers near the team’s stadium. Hill also said he wants one of the officers involved in the incident dismissed from the police force. Hill said he wishes he did some things “a bit differently” on Sunday morning, including leaving the window of his car down when officers instructed him to do so. He rolled up the window instead. The incident escalated quickly from there.

“I will say I could have been better,” Hill said. “I could have let down my window in that instant. But the thing about me is, I don’t want attention. I don’t want to be cameras-out, phones-on-you in that moment. But at the end of the day, I’m human. I’ve got to follow rules. I’ve got to do what everyone else would do. “Now, does that give them the right to literally beat the dog out of me? Absolutely not,” Hill continued. “But at the end of the day, I wish I could go back and do things a bit differently.” Hill did not mince words when detailing what action he thinks should be taken against the officer. “Gone. Gone. Gone. Gone. Gone. He’s gotta go, man,” Hill said.

NFL star Tyreek Hill says police ‘beat the dog out of me’, admits to traffic stop errors

Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill acknowledged on Wednesday that he could have handled a weekend traffic stop differently, but remained critical of how police officers treated him. Hill said he that he should left the window of his car down when officers instructed him to do so during the stop on Sunday. He rolled up the window instead. The incident escalated quickly from there. “I will say I could have been better,” Hill said. “I could have let down my window in that instant. But the thing about me is, I don’t want attention. I’ve got to do what everyone else would do.” Hill received citations for reckless driving and failing to wear a seatbelt after being pulled over. The incident happened close to Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium hours before Sunday’s game, in which Hill scored a touchdown to help seal a 20-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Tyreek Hill has no plans to kneel, call to defund police after incident with officers

Tyreek Hill and the Miami Dolphins will be back in action on Thursday night to take on the Buffalo Bills in a pivotal divisional matchup early in the season. After Hill’s incident with police last weekend and the bodycam footage that was released to the public earlier in the week, fans may think a protest could be coming on the sideline for the Dolphins. But that doesn’t appear to be the case. Hill admitted he wished he could have done things a little differently in the incident. Kneeling during the national anthem in protest of police brutality and racial injustice became a flashpoint in the NFL world during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick started the movement.

Kelly: Two wrongs don’t add up to anyone being right in Tyreek Hill saga | Opinion

One of the more well-known Biblical verses hits a bull’s-eye on my sentiments regarding the recent saga the Miami Dolphins are involved in. “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone,” — John 8:7.

Nobody is arguing that Tyreek Hill wasn’t a victim on Sunday’s exchange with police, hours before kickoff of Miami’s 20-17 season-opening win against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Who deserves to be dragged out of their vehicle for allegedly driving 20 mph above the speed limit, having an officer’s knee placed in his back while handcuffed on the ground? Then later being forced to the ground again by the same overly aggressive officer. “When we tell you to do something, you do it. You understand?” Danny Torres yelled at Hill as his knee pushed into the All-Pro receiver’s back. “You understand? Not what you want, but what we tell you. You’re a little f—ing confused.”

Former USMNT goalkeeper Tim Howard calls Tyreek Hill 'arrogant' over police detention

The former US National team star Tim Howard did not hold back on Miami Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill and his “arrogance” during his run-in with Miami-Dade Police. Tim Howard has always been an in-your-face person. Even from the start of his career with the MetroStars in Major League Soccer, Howard had a fire that this generation o USMNT players lacks. To many, Howard is the most athletic goalkeeper the USMNT has ever had. The Everton legend, upon retiring from the game, has turned to being a pundit. In England, he writes a column in the Daily Mail where he usually shares his thoughts on soccer in the United States. This time, Howard turned his attention to NFL star Tyreek Hill, calling the Miami Dolphins star “arrogant” over what, in his view, could have been an avoided incident with Miami-Dade Police. Howard also went on to call out the NFL and its people for standing by Hill, who, in his eyes, was in the wrong, while leaving Colin Kaepernick behind.
