Uber

Have you used Uber?

Why did AT&T put Uber app on my new phone? I live in an area where there is little in the way of public transportation. When I've had to call a cab/taxi. it is dispatched from two towns away. Cabs don't hang around here unless a major sporting event is going on in town. For the most part, pedicabs cover the major events, shuttling people from distant parking to almost the front door of the venues. Many local restaurants offer shuttles too.

In short, I'm better off riding my bike or getting a rental car if my car is out of service.

It seems Uber was the best thing since sliced bread earlier in the year and then a couple of months ago I heard the Uber drivers were protesting.

What do you know about Uber?

I know Uber sucks, is illegal in many areas (with good reason) and can be dangerous for women traveling alone.

It's like the internet only in real life. You and the driver are anonymous to each other, except the driver knows where you live and has all your credit card details.

I wish NYC would ban Uber. I never have and never will use them here.

If I wanted to return to the Wild West, I'd pick up a flex capacitor.

In other words, like any taxi service, only with a lower incidence of Somali and Pakistani drivers. And the reason it's illegal in some areas is not with good reason, but for one simple reason: Cronyism. With the medallion racket being what it is, we can't just have people providing a service without paying extortion for the "privilege" of earning a living, now can we?

It works fine in smaller Mayberry areas where people know enough of their neighbors to trust each other. But it ain't gonna fly in huge metropolitan areas without any kind of regulation. This isn't a lemonade stand.

I've used Uber several times in the San Diego area without issue. My son and his friends use it on the reg in the Travis AF base area also without issue so far. They're inexpensive, fast and professional around here. That's what I know.

Having worked the legit industry for nearly a decade before retiring, I'm afraid I'll have to call bullshit on this one. You simply have no idea what you're talking about.

How, again, is that different from the situation when you take any cab? Other than the crony capitalism, that is?

All you care about and argue for is the supply side of your fantasy free market. I'm talking about safeguards, about accountability. If something happens in a yellow cab, there's a 4-character number that will ensure instant identification and accountability. I don't have enough of an idea of what I'd be getting into with an Uber ride. It's basically Craigslist with a middleman, one that isn't yet involved enough in insuring passenger safety, either from physical harm or ripoffs. It all depends on where you live, apparently.

We'll never agree on this, and unlike you I don't get an erection from debating. Have fun.
