Wacky Watches: Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel

I want to smell dark matter
I can't be bothered posting a proper "Wacky Reviews" thread but I do want to post comments on Buffy as I'vd randomly decided to rewatch it, so here's some comments!

Welcome To The Hellmouth - I alwasy remember thinking this episode was kind of bad and imagining it had probably aged badly. It's not THAT bad, I don't think. I mean it's nowhere near the level the show will later achieve, but it's not like it doesn't show potential. The thing that's aged the worse is everyone's hair? Everyone's hair looks bad. And the Master rising out of blood looked cheap as fuck.

I think the Buffy/Willow/Xander scenes work the best. The actors are already pretty decent. But they give Buffy way too many quips and they get a bit annoying. Like when she says something to Angel about "turtle wax" or whatever. That was bad. That whole scene is bad because David Boreanaz is completely terrible at this point. You know who's not terrible? Charisma Carpenter? Her delivery of "oh please" when Jesse tries hitting on her made me laugh out loud.

Julie Benz's face is completely different. Funny how that happens!

I might join you in this. I've been wanting to rewatch it for ages, especially since I missed quite a few episodes later in the series.

The Harvest - So Joss wanted to put Jesse in the main credits so it would be a surprise when he died. I WONDER IF HE'LL USE THAT IDEA AGAIN LATER. Of course the problem with Jesse's death is he's literally never mentioned again despite supposedly being best friends with Xander and Willow. I do like the accidental nature of his death though!

Buffy does a SUPER JUMP over the school gate. Let's watch out of those in future episodes! Principal Fluttie does not seem like someone who'll be around for long.

Giles is just really stuffy Watcher guy here. Which makes sense since they have to introduce him that way for character development and Buffy's story. But you wouldn't think he'll turn out to be awesome just from watching these two episodes.

GOT TO SAY Charisma Carpenter continues to be the standout performer. She's excellent in all her scenes. David Boreanaz on the other hand is beyond awful again. And he's standing in sunlight!?

The Master actor does a good job just standing around saying things.

I should have just called this "Wacky Reviews" really.

Witch - That's quite an unimaginative name. This is an okay freak of the week episode. I mean, it felt a bit long. The humour isn't as good and the characters aren't as developed as they'll later be (obviously) so it's basically just a Smallville episode. It's not bad. Joyce is kind of annoying? Giles gets knocked out for the first time and maybe I should keep track of that or something. Amy's mom is trapped in a trophy at the end. Will she ever get out!?

Teacher's Pet - Xander is a horny boy who wants to have sex with his hot teacher. That's fine and everything, but there should have been more of a plot than that. I mean, I guess he and the other boy learned a lesson about not pretending not to be virgins. But yeah this is bad. Xander hears an electric guitar in his head after the teach asks him back to her house. That's bad. If I'd seen this episode randomly and didn't know the show later became good I wouldn't have watched it again. There's a vampire with a Wolverine claw and Buffy ties his hands behind his back but doesn't take his claw off first. It's bad. Angel's a bit less of a jerk now but still not interesting. I guess it's nice that Buffy remembers the dead teacher. THERE AN EGG SAC AT THE END MAYBE THAT WILL COME BACK LATER!

DID YOU NOTICE THE PRE-FIGURING OF THE HIRING OF AMBER BENSON AT THE START??

NO, EXPLAIN WHAT YOU MEAN, PLEASE?

The cheerleader who catches fire at the start is named Amber, and her trainer is named Benson.

IT'S LIKE THEY KNEW.

OKAY, YEAH, THAT'S A THING.

Never Kill A Boy On The First Date - This is an improvement. Rather than just a freak of the week, the story is about Buffy juggling her vampire slaying life with wanting to be a teenage girl who goes on dates and stuff. That's what a show about a teenage vampire slayer should be doing! Of course the boy she goes out with is kind of a bad actor and not even hot but never mind. Giles gets more to do here and has a nice scene talking to Buffy at the end. Cordelia says "hello salty goodness" when she sees Angel and she's good at saying lines like that. The Anointed One being a child is a nice twist? Still not great or anything but the best episode so far.

Never Kill A Boy is one of the episodes I don't skip in S1

(WTTH/Harvest, NKABOTFD, Angel, Nightmares, Prophecy Girl)

I have been watching some Buffy recently as well. Not doing a series run but watching random episodes here and there. There is a great Buffy Podcast where they (a married couple who happen to be best selling authors in their own right) go through each episode from the start and talk heavily in depth about each and also rank them as they go. It's well worth checking out (yeah, I listen to a lot of Podcasts)

I'm listening to the podcast review of the movie. It's better than watching the movie.

The Pack - Two episodes after the last bad Xander episode we have another bad Xander episode! This one is a bit better (which isn't hard) because at least there's the scene where Xander is mean to Willow which is good, but yeah it's still pretty bad! It's been a long time since I've been in high school but these high school kids aren't very believable! Flutie dies, which is good. There's a weird ending where Giles agrees to not tell Buffy that Xander remembers attempting to rape her but it's played like a joke?

Giles knocked out count: 2

Angel - I thought this episode had flashbacks so I was kind of disappointed there there were no flashbacks. Boreanaz is better at playing the dark brooding Angel than the weird, nervous jerk Angel of the first two episodes. But is this episode any different from Twilight REALLY IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT? It's a shame they killed Darla so quickly, there was more to explore with her and Angel. This episode is okay though.

Just bought the complete series of Angel on dvd from Amazon for £33. Physical media might be dying, but that means it's really really cheap which means it's better than ever!

So yeah should I start a new thread when I get to Angel? I think I will. Also IN THEORY I want to watch the episods in the order they were originally shown (so watch a Buffy, watch an Angel, watch a Buffy, watch an Angel and so on) but that will probably get annoying after a while? I'll decide when I get there.

POST THEM IN THE SAME THREAD

At the very least you should try and watch Angel Season 1 with Buffy Season 4, as that's where the most crossovers are. And Fool For Love / Darla the next year.

Watch seasons 1 and 2 of Angel alternating with Buffy, don't bother for seasons 6 and 3, and then there's a weird order for seasons 7 and 4 that isn't pure alternating but that you can look up.

I should really watch my season 5 angel box set, maybe when you have burned through the first 4 I will join you for the last series.
