Wacky Watches: Community

CaptainWacky

I want to smell dark matter
Okay the next Buffy is another bad Marti Noxon episode that I can't be bothered watching right now and the Community episodes are shorter so FUCK IT I can have two threads going for two different shows at once, you don't have to read them if you don't want to OKAY?

Community - The first episode is just called Community? The music is different? There's like more exterior shots of Greendale, maybe? Abed says "cool cool cool cool cool cool cool" but not "Cool. Cool cool cool"? Chang isn't in it? Annie, Shirley and Troy don't really get much screentime? Britta is "cool girl" but kind of lacking in Brittaness. But I think it's pretty good, considering everything! I'd certainly like to see what happens next.

Spanish 101 - Jeff and Annie say that "M'Lord/M'Lady" thing that they said in the season five finale where I probably should have remembered it was a reference to this episode. Troy and Abed rap together in Spanish. These two characters seem to work well together. Britta is a bit more Britta-like though I don't need every episode to end with her being kind of impressed by Jeff and WILL THEY GET TOGTHER? This episode is pretty good, I think!

I think episode 1's actual name is "Pilot", but Netflix I guess.

DID YOU NOTICE HOW BRITTA WAS A LOT MORE TANNED IN EPISODE 2 THAN SHE IS NORMALLY? I did.

Beauty And The Beasts, yep...

Introduction To Film - This is a good episode. This is probably the episode where I said "hey this show is actually really good!" the first time I watched it. I like the wacky film teacher and the Abed story has heart but is also funny! Also Chase has some funny lines. I kind of forgot that he was actually funny.

"You're not my mother!"
"She's not?"

Social Psychology - This episode is okay. The Duncan/Annie experimenting on Abed story is okay but not particularly funny. Jeff and Shirley bonding by making fun of Vaugn is more amusing. He really does have weirdly small nipples. And I find Pierce's earnoculars funny! Badger from Breaking Bad makes a brief cameo as "Stoner guy". (Actually he was in the previous episode was well and I missed it.)

Advanced Criminal Law - I think there's been enough Jeff/Britta interaction at this point. I mean I like them together but I'd like to see them doing other stuff too. They have a trial in the pool area. It's wacky! But meh. Weakest episode so far I'd say. Is this the first time Leonard appears? I forgot to pay attention to things like that. Oh look there's Garrett as well.

Football, Feminism and You - The Dean comes in and talks to the group at the start! That's a thing now! "How did you know my nickname was T-Bone?" Annie liking Troy has been a thing since the pilot, but it's not been heavily featured (like Britta/Jeff which thankfully takes a break in this episode.) I don't think it comes up again after this? I like the Human Being mascot. Jeff and Annie do "m'lady/m'lord" again WHY DID I FORGET THAT WAS A THING.

Introduction To Statistics - "I saw your father's ghost again. He was angry." BUT DOESN'T PIERECE'S DAD DIE IN SEASON 3? Annie dresses as a skeleton. Britta dresses as a squirrel. Abed is Batman. This is good stuff. I forgot about Professor Slater. She's okay. It's good to move away from Jeff/Britta. Pierce never saw Beastmaster, he just wanted to be cool. This is a very good episode.

Home Economics - Oh, the Annie/Troy thing did continue. Troy feels a bit more like episode one jock Troy here than "friends with Abed" Troy. I don't like the Annie/Troy subplot here at all. Abed says "Cool. Cool cool cool." properly! This is the one with the "Britta is a bitch" song. Not one of the better episodes.

Debate 109 - This is the episode responsible for a million Jeff/Annie shipper videos. And it's a great episode! The main plot is very good (I enjoy the wheelchair jerk!) but also the subplots are enjoyable and everyone does funny things. Also on a shallow note Alison Brie has never looked better.

Environmental Science - This is the most heavily featured Chang has been so far and it's a pretty good episode. I thinkk Chang works better here where he's crazy but in a "sad personal life" way rather than a "eating Abed's pants for some reason" way (I don't think he ever ate Abed's pants.) Annie does the "gravy train" thing. Troy and Abed sing to a rat. It's nice.

The Politics Of Human Sexuality - I couldn't remember this episode at all. After watching it again, I can see why. This is not a good episode. Like I just finished watching it and I literally can't think of any funny bits to mention here. Let's move on.

Comparative Religion - The Dean dresses up as something! Finally! Okay, this episode isn't super memorable either (there's a bully with a moustache? there's a weird fight scene?) but it's funnier and better than the previous one so I like it! Britta does a good speech.

Investigative Journalism - I guess this was the first episdoe back from Christmas break because they're all like "it's good to be back, here's Jack Black! He's famous for some reason!" Everyone's laughing at Britta trying to be cool now so I guess that's a new thing. The Dean seems more overtly gay for Jeff (if he even was before.) "Annie's pretty young we try not to sexualise her." I know the Jack Black character is supposed to be annoying, but he's...too annying. There's certainly a lot of things in this episode but it's not actually all that great.

Interpretive Dance - This is the episode with Britta and Troy dancing but also a boring Jeff/Slater story that I don't care about. I don't think I laughed once. BAD EPISODE.

Romantic Expressionism - Britta turns it into a snake. FINALLY. Automatically better than the previous two episodes. I like Kickpuncher. "I'm not Juno, okay homeslice?" Annie and Vaughn are still dating at the end. I didn't remember that.

Communication Studies - Can I just say that VERY FEW EPISODES of Community in the first season have the full title sequence? I feel like it's worth saying. "Molly Ringworm." Britta wears a good dress. This episode is pretty good.

Physical Education - SHE SAID "BAGGLES." And "I lived in New York." And Chang says "you're the worst" to her. Those are things. Jeff plays pool naked. We don't really see Abed with girls very often, but I do like when he explains to the others that they're being patronising trying to help him. It's a good episode.

Basic Genealogy - This episode is pretty decent! (It's the Family Day one, I don't have anything else to say really.) I think the "hoo hoo" music plays in this episode but not the "hoo hoo" part of it. Jeff and Slater split up which is for the best really. First shots fired at Glee. Okay I did have more to say.

Beginner Pottery - Some of our characters take a potter class. Some take a boating class. Both plots are amusing!

The Science Of Illusion - Annie looks hot as a security guard. Abed doing tv stuff is amusing. FIRST MENTION THAT BRITTA HAS AT LEAST ONE CAT. Troy and Abed in the Morning! It's an episode of firsts!

Contemporary American Poultry - Hey, this is a great episode! It feels quite significant becaue it's the first time the whole reality of the school warps around the plot (mafia movie with chicken fingers.) Like there's been wacky stuff going on before but it's usually more...localised? Wait until you see what happens two episdoes later though! Troy gets a monkey named 'Annie's Boobs'. Britta has great hair and is a vegetarian and her cat is sick.

"Pierce, stop trying to coin the phrase 'streets head.'."
"Trying? Coined and minted!"

The Art of Discourse - Britta's knitting a tiny little eyepatch for her new cat. But yeah it's the one where the teenagers say "Schmitty" a lot for some reason. It's alright. Not a top level episode. That doesn't mean it's bad. Yes Britta did end up owning a used iPod Nano in 2014 so that's good!

Modern Warfare - !

English as a Second Language - This one and the previous one had the full title sequence. I should have noted that for anyone keeping track! Oh this is the one with the Troy plumber thing that I didn't like the first time I watched it and I still don't like it now. And here's why: it's just like a one to one recreation of some movie? But it's not really funny on its own. To me, anyway. And yeah Abed even says "it's from a movie" but that doesn't make it work for me. I know it comes up again later so that makes it a bit more tolerable. The other plot with Annie and Chang is good.

Pascal's Triangle Revisited - I like how a lot of the recurring characters return (Professor Duncan! Badger! Slater, I guess! Actually I like her more in this episode than before) including Vaugn for the first time in ages. Troy eats a giant cookie. Chang quotes a line from Lost that no one would remember was from Lost now. The Dean has people dressed as dalmations. "He's been to flavour country now, they should retire the table we did it on!" Ducan's got a really big penis in a rapping way. Annie says "Greendale iss where I belong" and the "hoo hoo" music starts and now I know what it's called "Greendale's where I belong" on Youtube! This episode was actually much better than I remembered it being (I think I just remembered the Jeff/Annie kiss and forgot the rest.)

Anthropology 101 - Troy is dressed as Spider-Man! MAYBE IT'LL HAPPEN FOR REAL (it won't, they're making Peter 15 or 16.) Old White Man Says! That was a thing for a while. Oh, Betty White's in it. I know they were making fun of how Betty White was overused in sitcoms at this time. But she still feels really out of place. Britta says "HIGH ON MY OWN DRAMA?" in a really awesome way. Chang says "GAAAAAAAAAAY!" and it's really good too. This is a good funny episode!

Accounting for Lawyers - Eh. Jeff's lawyer friend shows up so he acts like a jerk. There's a guy with a hole in his hand. To be honest this isn't very good. I didn't laugh until the chloroform bit.

I remember a lot of lines from Lost! "We have to go back" and "Have you ever wondered how I got my tattoos" and "Save the cheerleader save the world"!

The Psychology of Letting Go - I read an interview with Dan Harmon where he said he hated the Britta/Annie plot in this episode. Where Britta accuses Annie of flirting with guys to get them to care about pelicans? Then they have an oil fight. Yeah, it's not the best. But Abed delivers a baby in the background! Jeff learns that it would be a bad idea to show Pierce his recently deceased mother's body. Which is a bit better than it sounds. Then Betty White again. Moving on.

Basic Rocket Science - This is better! It's the KFC rocket simulator one. The City College Dean appears for the first time. I mean it's not like the best "event episode" ever but it's good I think?

Messianic Myths and Ancient Peoples - This was better than I remembered it being. I think I didn't "get" the Abed/Jesus thing the first time. But watching it back it's not really that complicated, is it? But yeah not one of the best episodes. Early season two is slightly inconsistent.

Epidemiology - Hey this episode isn't very realistic! But it is very good! The best of the four I watched tonight by some way. (It's the zombie one.)

Aerodynamics of Gender - The girls use Abed's powers to be mean to Hilary Duff and her mean gang but become even more evil than the mean gang in the process. I mean you'd think they'd be self aware enough to notice this, but it is a sitcom and sometimes characters do things like this. They seem to have dropped the "Chang wants to destroy the group" thing and he's back to showing up and saying funny commentary on what's happening and he's actually really good at that ("Aww snap, here it comes y'all!"). This is the episode with the weird trampoline subplot and I don't know what it's referencing (if anything!) but it's very funny so I'm not complaining! Maybe, like, they intentionally did a story that looks like it's referencing something but actually isn't referencing anything as a meta commentary on how the show references things. And Joshau is racist. "I'm going to slit your butt's throats" is a good line. Pierce breaks his legs. The B-plot is brilliant, the A-plot is pretty average.

Cooperative Calligraphy - Oh hey it's the bottle episodewith the pen. Oh hey it's great.

Conspiracy Theories and Interior Design - This episode has the great Jeff/Annie conspiracy story as the A-plot AND the blanket fort story as the B-plot! And they cross over into a blanket fort chase sequence! Yeah! You can't really argue with that! (Because it's great again.)

Mixology Certification - I think some people didn't like this episode because it's got a different style from the rest? But it is good. It has good Troy character moments. And it is actually still really funny. And has earned use of the "hoo hoo" music. So you should like it.

So in my previous post I was thinking season two had been kind of ropey so far but these four episodes are all really great so forget about that worry!

Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas - I remember my GOOD FRIEND Fuddlemiff found it hard to enjoy this episode because of what it means for Abed's mental health. He started off as someone with Asperger's (Abed, not Fuddlemiff!) who could understand the world through tv tropes, but here he's having full on delusions that the world is claymation and he smashes up some cars. It's a thing tv shows do where they exaggerate or change someone's character as the show goes on so that it fits whatever story they want to tell. If it was REAL then frankly he would have been sectioned or at least needed more professional help thand Professor Duncan and his friends singing a nice song could provide. So I can see Fuddlemiff's point...but it is a really nice song that did make me feel "aww" in my heart. So I did enjoy the episode! As for the animation, it is impressive considering it's a twenty minute tv show and there's probably a reason most shows don't do things like this. It's nowhere near the level of like a proper dedicated animated film would be (for example during the earlier songs the characters just kind of stand about instead of doing anything visually interesting) but again it's a tv budget and I'm sure they did the best they could so it really is impressive.

Asian Population Studies - I should have mentioned that Chang completely disappeared after Aerodynamics of Gender (other than a brief snowman cameo last episode) and I think I remember reading a Dan Harmon interview where he explained that was because they scrapped most of the "Chang wants into the study group" story. But it's back here. And Pierce isn't in a wheelchair anymore. This episode is pretty decent. Not on the level of the previous five but that's a pretty high level!

Celebrity Pharmacology - The Dean comes in wearing a bee outfit with a front stinger. He still hasn't done it too many times yet. I keep waiting for the "Pierce is a drug addict who sees Andy Dick" story to come back and I thought it would be in this episode but maybe I'm remember wrong and he only saw Andy Dick that one time? Anyway I like him going crazy and making children think drugs are cool.

"You don't count, Britta, you don't respond to anything appropriately."
"Thank you!"

Advanced Dungeons And Dragons - Season two sure has a lot of really memorable and strong episodes, doesn't it! Pierce seems like a lot eviler than he ever has been before? Possibly because that drug story is still playing out!

Early 21st Century Romanticism - IT'S THE LESBIAN EPISODE. Also yeah Pierce is hooked on drugs and seeing Andy Dick again. That's a relief! (Andy Dick isn't funny though.) MAGNITUDE FIRST APPEARANCE. HE SAYS "POP POP." The Abed/Troy story is sweet but maybe kind of sad for them? Good episode.

Intermediate Documentary Filmmaking - Yeah it's another concept epsidoe! Season two! So many concept episodes! And they're all good or great! This one is pretty great! Levar Burton! Explainabrag! "Well what do I know I'm Jeff Winger's dumb gay dad!" "HOLOCAUST diamonds!?"

Intro to Political Science - "Classic Winger!" This is the one where Abed has a thing with a secret service girl. The Ass Crack Bandit is mentioned. Maybe feels like they're obligated to do another Jeff/Annie episode because "the fans" liked their chemistry in season one but it maybe feels a bit forced or something. This isn't one of the top season two episdoes but it's not bad!

Custody Law and Eastern European Diplomacy - I really like the story with Britta and Sousa from Agent Carter (who is awesome here) and Britta singing "hit me with your genie's bottle, rub it all over me" and going "pew pew pew!" And "may-be...we...do..." I don't care if Andre or Change is Shirley's baby daddy though sorry. It's not very funny! Chang seems completely defined by being insane now, whereas in season one he was a bit more of a rounded person maybe?

Critical Film Studies - Britta in that wig is good. The episode is good.

Competitive Wine Tasting - Eeeeeh this is one of the weaker episode of the season. Maybe because it's been so good lately. The Troy pretending to be molested ("My emotions! MY EMOTIONS!") story is probably the best part. None of the stories have very satisfying endings.

Paradigms of Human Memory - It's the clipshow with clips from episodes that never happenedone! It's great! AGAIN! There's a lot of great episodes this season. It's really good how they make fun of the typical clipshow format. But also when the show the claymation one without the claymation. "Oh no I tripped! On a gumdrop!" Just watch the episode instead of reading this.

Applied Anthropology and Culinary Arts - Oh it's the one where Shirley has the baby. It's alright I guess. Kind of didn't hold my interest as much as others. It's 19 minute long which is weird. I should have mentioned earlier that Pierce has kind of faded into the background and doesn't really seem a proper part of the group anymore? Together Britta's cats can do anything.

A Fist Full of Paintballs - How do you follow season one's paintball episode? With a two-part paintball season finale guest starring Sawyer (in this part anyway) that's how! Can I just mention that Alison Brie is fucking hot in this episode? I don't think there's anything wrong with noticing that. Pierce going heel this season is a part of the story here and I wonder if that was planned all along or if they just noticed "hey we've had Pierce being a jerk a lot this season."

For A Few Paintballs More - While part one was a Western, this one is Star Wars. But not quite as commited to the theme? Pierce leaves the group at the end. Britta's seen this behaviour before. In cats. Her cats. I think part one was better but maybe that's because it had more Annie being hot. But she's still hot here and attracted to Abed as Han Solo. So I'm not complaining or anything! It's a good end to the season.
