World AIDS Day is observed on December 1 in over 120 countries worldwide. World AIDS Day, and the events and activities in the week leading up to it, aim to raise awareness in the community about HIV and AIDS, including the need for support and understanding for people living with HIV and AIDS, and the need for education and prevention initiatives.
HIV is one of the greatest challenges to human health. Currently an estimated 33 million people are living with HIV with more than half of these infections in women and children.
In western countries with high standards of health care and ready access to antiretroviral drugs, living with HIV means that people can live relatively normal lives. In many resource-poor communities however, where good health care and ready access to drugs is not readily available or very expensive, living with HIV can often result in a very different outcome.
UNAIDS Priorities
* Reducing sexual transmission of HIV
* Preventing mothers from dying and babies from becoming infected with
HIV
* Ensuring that people living with HIV receive antiretroviral treatment
(ART)
* Preventing people living with HIV from dying of TB
* Protecting drug users from becoming infected with HIV
* Ensuring that men who have sex with men, sex workers and transgender
people are empowered to access and deliver HIV services
* Removing punitive laws, polices, practices, stigma and discrimination
* Meeting the HIV needs of women and girls and stopping sexual and
gender-based violence
* Empowering young people to protect themselves from HIV
* Enhancing social protection for people affected by HIV
