Was "Saving Private Ryan" based on a true story?

I THINK IT WAS BASED ON A FAKE STORY MADE UP BY SOME WRITERS, WHO THEN FLESHED IT OUT WITH MORE FAKE ELEMENTS AND FAKE HAPPENINGS.
 
It woudl be pretty stupid to send all those people just for one guy when like 28 people died trying to get him and he was only Matt Demon anywya
 
Yeah but the wrong Ryan was Mal from firefly, and you get to see XXX shot many many times.
