I watched the first episode and...it was disappointingly dull. No real visual style, no wit, no charm. Every character a cliche; the "freaks and weirdos" at the school are just all dull tv high schoolers, there's two potential foppy hair boy love interests already. Gomez and Morticia had no chemistry in their brief screentime. The CGI monster at the end was terrible. Just completely flat other than Jenna Ortega doing her best as Wednesday (but she didn't have much to work with. Even Christina Ricci's character was dull. I'll watch some more just because I feel a loyalty to Jenna already(!) but I don't have high hopes.
I've watched a few more and it's a bit better. I mean I still find the YA teen detective/cheap Hogwarts stuff a bit disappointing, but I guess that's just what the show is. Jenna Ortega is really good and has some fun stuff, like the dance scene in whatever episode that was. The roommate character has grown on me a bit and The Thing is fun. Seems pretty obvious Ricci's character is going to be the killer otherwise why cast her as someone so bland...
I watched the first episode and it was fine. I wasn't super gripped but it was stylish enough. Jenna Ortega is carrying it pretty hard but that's not a massive surprise. Really don't have that many thoughts on it right now until I watch some more.
After the first episode I thought I might not watch the whole season, but I've liked it more as I've gone on. Jenna is definitely the main draw but I'm not hating the rest of it, even though I wish they hadn't gone for the knock-off Hogwarts setting.
I'm not watching 36 minutes of that but I liked your post for making the effort.
I have watched the whole season. It's okay. The casting of Jenna Ortega really does most of the heavy lifting. If you leave that aside it's really just a typical YA murder mystery wizard school thing with pretty predictable twists (yes the person you think is the villain all along really is) and underwritten character development. Wednesday is at first presented as a potential murderer, but her shcoolmates are more bothered by the fact she wars monocrhome clothes? Then like halfway through they all like her and are throwing her surprise birthday parties. The love triangle stuff was bad.
The one relationship that works really well is the one with her roommate, thanks to the chemistry (no, tumblr, I don't mean romantic chemistr) between actresses. The Thing was good fun too. Wasn't too impressed by Gomez or Morticia. Never felt like they were about to shag each other. Fester was good in his one episode and the show could have used more of him. Gwendonline Christie was good too.
BUT REALLY I found it all watchable, fine and GENTLE FAMILY FRIENDLY FUN mainly because Ortega really is that great and I don't want to hype her up too much but she is the undeniable future Queen of the female celebrity world oops I couldn't stop.
Yeah I don't know what they were thinking with Luis Guzman. It's like having Guillermo from Jimmy Kimmel in the role.
And did they really need an A-Lister like CZJ for Morticia when she has so little screen time? It's taking exposure away from an actor who could really use it...
Also, as far as I remember, Morticia doesn't produce tears, so having her cry after leaving the school was a sloppy choice.
