Well this just fucking sucks.

What are the odds? Both my Geforce card fan and my chipset fan have died. Yes, both are completley fucking dead, as in not moving one iota.

I don't even know how long its been like this, I run Cool & Quiet on my ASUS A8N-E so I didn't really notice the decrease in sound, my system has most likley taken a batering from the heat the last couple days. I only noticed today when Black and White 2 started to freeze in the classic overheating way things do a few minutes into playing.

I flashed my BIOS among other things and the new version hung at start-up and sounded off a chip-fan faliure at me. Puzzled by this thinking it was a heat diode fuck-up I opened the bitch up and lo and behold my new BIOS was telling the truth. THIS FUCKING SUCKS. I'm playing with fire just writing this, my computer is a pretty nice piece of equipment and I cant live without it but I think I am going to have to turn her off and deal with it until monday or tuesday when I can get some time to get down the comp shop and buy a Zalman heat sink/fan or something.

Chipset fan shouldn't be too much hassel, at a pinch I can just get a heat sink, its only the mobo chip but I will get a fan anywy, thing is I can't be 100% that its actually the mechanism itself, it could well be the mobo but I am praying that its not. Why my Geforce fan isn't running I couldn't tell you but it does point to a mobo malfunction which would be the greatest disaster for me, ever. I dont have the time or money to be fucking replacing half my system over faulty fans. :gagh:

I AM PISSED OFF.

Perhaps, but the fact remains that this is going to be a headache the magnitude of watching a 72 hour higshool production of CATS.

I just can't figure out why the hell both fans would fail, obviously my CPU fan is running fine otherwise there would be no way my computer would be on right now.

I am getting the distinct feeling this is going to cost a lot of money and time.

First of all, I'd like to compliment your taste in games.

Secondly, I've noticed the same problem when I play Doom3. I get overheating alerts all the time, especially (and this is amusing) when I'm in the "Hell" level, which has incredible graphics requirements.

Flashing BIOS is always risky. You are 1000% sure it was the correct version?

Also, any power supply problems lately?

Do you use an Athlon, or Pentium?

What Geforce card do you use Menty. I might suggest a NV Cooler, it's an after market cooler to put on most Geforce cards. As it is an Aftermarket cooler it does void the warrentee, but it's well worth it, hardly any noise and it keeps it nice and cool.

AMD64 3400+ on a ASUS A8N-E. I have F.E.A.R sititng infront of me right now as well, but I am not even going to bother. That will fry the fastest comps with full on water cooling.

The Bios flash was cool, it is risky but I did it by the book so it all worked out fine, I was running a v1 PHOENIX Bios and I updated to v6 so it was worth the minor risk.

It shouldn't be the Power supply, everything else seems to be running fine, I would have expected more tell tale signs. But it is a mystery why BOTH fans are gone, one sitting on my GPU and the other sitting on the northbridge. What are the chances?

As long as its not a mobo problem (I would be gutted) I can deal. I am thinking I may just buy a 6800GT and Sli the bastard up to my other 6800.

I am most unimpressed though, B&W2 and F.E.A.R both sitting infront of me and I can't play either one. No, no, no,.. This will not do at all.

Just a run of the mill 6800. It serves me well enough for now.. well it did anyway.

Is the NV cooler powered by the onboard supply or do you hook it directly to the mobo? I will check it out. I will be going for a zalman Heatsink for my litle northbridge chipset problem since they rock, I just wish I wasn't being forced into this situation. And to think I was pulling my hair out for hours over my weird freezes. I refused to accept it was an overheating issue, I had no idea my computer was in such precarious danger.

Hmm... Strange indeed. No possible physical problems? (dust, etc)

It really sounds like something has shorted out. Does your motherboard have advanced overclocking and cooling management? (I can overclock and adjust fanspeed from a Windows GUI, for instance)

Both fans are clean. I took the GPU out and cleaned it with a brush even, its not that. Both are in good nick, I keep my computer nice and tidy so dust is not the problem, no.

Yeah, it sounds like a short to me too. It really is going to be a nightmare if thats the case since it will mean replacing the mobo which is just not going to be fun seeing as I am skint and its going to be a while before I can raise the funds. The mobo itself is shit hot, its a quality board allright, has all the bells and whistles, I love it, well I did love it.

I have tolls to check the fan speed and moniter the sytem from within Windows and they find nothing wrong except the two fans being mysteriously turned off. My CPU fan is working fine and my D-LED system boots up fine with no problems. They are just not spinning! ARRGH!

Menty, you need a gig of dedicated video ram, and that will solve your problems.

You can have ram up the ass, and the only thing a faster processor does is overheat.

I cant burn DVD's unless the outdoor temp is below 55.

Good news, I'm back at operating efficancy.

I have just put my PC back together and I removed the Northbridge fan and fitted one of these bad-boys instead.

ZALMAN rules.

Also fitted a new fan to my Geforce and now everything is sweet again.
