I want to smell dark matter
So it starts with casting as always. I don't think this series had any worse casting than the last few years, but that's not saying much. We were promised "more older housemates" but all we get was desperate wannabe Eileen who was an embarrassment and Simon who was somehow even worse. That's a problem in itself, the only older people who actually want to go on BB any more are those who have been desperately trying to find fame their whole lives. We always complain about there being too many models but Jade was (to me) the most interesting housemate. Yes she was great looking but she was also nuts (in a harmless way) and always entertaining to watch. Harry, another "model" (I guess?) was interesting for similar reasons, though to be honest towards the end I questioned her mental health a bit. Danny and his connections to every ex housemate ever was a problem. I liked Jack in the end because he was just a good old fashioned "honest" housemate. At least his reactions were real and he wasn't trying to create stories for himself.
NO, I'd say the biggest problem was the producers trying to manufacture drama. Big Brother started as a social experiment. It really did! Arguments and romances between housemates happened naturally and became big stoires. But over the years it was expected that every series would have such arguments and romances so the producers began going out of their way to make them happen. Look at how many tasks had outside information revealed to the housemates. It was ridiculous. They'd just randomly read tweets to the housemates for no fucking reason! Nothing could happen naturally because the housemates were constantly being told how they were coming across and instructed on how to change! They literally had people come into the house and tell them how to act. Literally.
Then there was the four in, four out thing. Remember when we used to be able to vote out housemates we don't like? Now we're just instructed to vote out "the boring ones" and the evictions are twisted in such a way as to make it happen. I'm sure Marc was always going to go in and I can understand why he was cast, but for the five weeks he was there it was as if he was working directly for the producers. He never felt like a legit housemate.
But it wasn't enough to wipe out half the cast after two weeks! Oh no, they had to put ex-housemates in too. For weeks on end! Ex-housemates who hated each other so had spectacular rows while the real housemates just sat around like spare parts. Why have people stay in the house if we can't vote them out?
Also the tasks. Can you remember any of them? The best was the hotel task. That was a classic BB task. It stressed the housemates out and got them reacting, but they didn't need to be blatantly pushed into reacting. The part where Jack pretend to eat the pastry and Joel blew up so he ate it anyway? That was a great, natural moment brought about by a task. Of course even that task had Jasmine coming in to make a them for herself (lol) by getting off with Cristian and her stay being extended because the producers liked what was she doing...
Oh and did they ever have proper nominatons? Only one week, I think. They went to face to face noms right at the start so everyone knew what everyone thought of each other and nobody had a chance to change their mind or develop nunanced opinions...
Anwyay there's lots of other reaosns I'll remember later!
