The Legendary Troll King
I was coming up on the corner of Cerillos Road and St Francis Drive in Santa Fe, NM with this guy I was leaving for California with. I had just picked up the Journal of Popular Culture #1, which I had just finished publishing, and was going to San Diego to sell the books and have some fun. It was mid 50's, sunny breezy NM weather as usual, and we were flipping for tunes on the radio. The news cam on that John Lennon had been murdered and I swear to God, the world went cold for me at that point.
Lennon (along with Muhammad Ali) are the two people I look up to in this world. For a nobody like Chapman to come along and mess with history "just because he could" or "because he wanted to be famous", whatever. See, that's where I don;t get it. I'm fucking obsessed, about just about everything. But killing someone, a real person for some twisted inside "revelation" is beyond disgusting.
Lennon's contribution to society is huge. What I liked about his music was it's unembarrassed roughness. He and George Martin got along very well in the studio in the good Beatle years, it's a shame he loved Yoko so much, she was such a distraction he got, well...distracted.
Greatest fucking rock and roller in the history of music IMO
Still very much missed.
