Why Watchmen won't work

They can have all the good faith in the world but it simply isn't possible to get a story of that complexity satisfactorally into a 2 1/2 hour movie. This means they'll either:

A. Cut out lots of important stuff and focus mainly on the style, action and setpieces, thereby rendering it irrelevant, or...

B. Attempt to cram all the various backstories, plot threads, subtelties and complexities into 2 1/2 hours thereby making it an incoherent mess.

It's a shame. If it had to be made I think it would work better as a TV miniseries. Hollywood doesn't seem to understand what Alan Moore gets - that graphic novels are in many ways harder to adapt for the screen than normal novels.

You're fooling no one, VKD --we know that all you care about is full-frontal Dr. Manhattan and getting to surreptitiously videorecord his glowing bright blue choad at the first screening you sneak into.

The thing is that it's going to come off as weird, offbeat superhero story, which is fine, but it's a totally different artistic endeavour than the original GN. WATCHMEN was as much about critiquing the conventions of superhero storytelling as it was anyhing else. A comparable project in film -- a meta-superhero movie -- would have to be very different.

The main problem I can see from the trailer is that the heroes just look too "cool". It's supposed to be about what happens when normal people become super heroes. Nite Owl should look like a podgy dork.

But I think it's going to be pretty good.

No shit?

My question is you've seen so much of of Silk Spectre II in the trailers, and I know Carla Gugino is playing Silk Spectre I, but will we see her backstory as well? I don't want to delve into it since I'm sure there are some who haven't read it so I'll just put a spoiler up:

Will we see her rape by The Comedian, and all that? I'd hate to see such a crucial part of her and her daughter's life be mentioned in passing.

Also...is it me, or does Dr. Manhattan look like Keven Spacey when he's all blue and electric?

I think if Silk Spectre 1 makes the cut we'll definitely be seeing that part...well, not seeing it, but it'll be implied.

I hope we see The Comedian murdering pregnant vietmanese (or whatever they've changed it to) women too!

^From what I've heard they're filming it, but it'll be a totally separate thing that might be online as a viral promotion sometime early next year --but either way will definitely be included on the dvd as an extra.
