WOMEN'S BRACKETOLOGY: 2024 NCAA TOURNAMENT​

We will project the field of 68 every week from now until Selection Sunday on March 17. Our bracket updates every Tuesday through December before shifting to semiweekly projections (Tuesday and Friday) once conference play begins in January. Albany, New York, and Portland, Oregon, will host the regionals, as the two-site format remains for a second consecutive year. It all culminates in Cleveland at the Final Four on April 5 and 7.

UConn's fall from the top 16 was the focus last week. Now, Tennessee has tumbled out of the field entirely. Three losses in their past four games have landed the Lady Vols (5-5) in the First Four Out. A NET ranking of 96, despite playing six NCAA tournament-caliber opponents (1-5), is most concerning, as the schedule strength hasn't helped that number.

The opening night of SEC play largely went according to form, but where it didn't proved to be bad news for the conference. Losses dropped Texas A&M one seed line and Mississippi State two seed lines. After South Carolina (1-seed) and LSU (3-seed), the Aggies' No. 8 seed is the league's next highest.

Head-to-head isn't more or less important than any of the other 13 criteria the selection committee uses to evaluate teams. However, when other factors are equal or essentially equal, head-to-head must be applied. The committee has been consistent about this over the past few seasons. That's why NC State, not Colorado, is the final No. 1 seed.

Ingredients
8 pig's feet, split
1 onion, chopped
2 ribs celery, chopped
¾ cup white vinegar
2 tablespoons red pepper flakes (Optional)
2 tablespoons seasoned salt
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 bay leaves

Directions

Step 1: Thoroughly wash pig's feet in cold water and place into a large pot or Dutch oven. Add onion, celery, vinegar, red pepper flakes, seasoned salt, garlic, black pepper, and bay leaves, then pour in water to cover.

Step 2: Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and braise until pork is tender and falling off the bones, about 2 hours.

This was the most difficult bracket to compile so far this season. From the No. 1 seeds straight through the bubble teams, there were no easy decisions -- except South Carolina at No. 1 overall. The other three 1-seeds are from the Pac-12. UCLA and Stanford lead the country in top-25 NET wins with five apiece.

WOMEN'S BRACKETOLOGY: 2024 NCAA TOURNAMENT​

Notre Dame over UConn. Oregon State upsetting Colorado and Utah. Mississippi State shocking LSU. Washington State stunning UCLA. It's been a wild few days. It's been a wild season. Apparently, reliability only comes in three forms -- death, taxes and South Carolina. But keep one word in mind with these upsets: resume. When it comes to making the field and (most significantly) seeding, don't overreact to one isolated result. Yes, the aforementioned games were important and moved the Bracketology needle, but this deep into the season they are a piece to a team's puzzle, not its entirety. For example, the Irish looked great in Storrs, but it doesn't erase their 14-point loss at home to Syracuse two days earlier or sitting in sixth place in the ACC. As great as the Bulldogs' win over LSU was, it marked their first top-50 NET win of the season. It's fun to be in the moment, but in Bracketology it's important to not be a prisoner to it.

February is here, and as the frenzy leading up to Selection Sunday jumps into another gear, it's a good time for a reminder about the women's selection process and one element that causes some confusion and misinformation annually. The women's committee doesn't use the quadrant system utilized on the men's side. If you hear references to Quad 1 wins or Quad 3 losses, ignore them. They don't exist. The quad system incorporates where a game is played in measuring the significance of a win or a loss. While the women's committee considers the value of a road win vs. one at home, it's not plugged into the metric like it is in the men's game. Top-25, top-50 and top-100 NET wins are the reference points in women's basketball.

WOMEN'S BRACKETOLOGY: 2024 NCAA TOURNAMENT​

Want to see where the bracket could change in the next two weeks? Keep a close eye on Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are the next big potential bracket movers. Sure, winning at UConn was huge, but their next-best wins are Tennessee and Miami -- and until now, Notre Dame has benefited from a light ACC schedule. Six of Notre Dame's seven conference wins came against Pitt (twice), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Virginia. The Irish's No. 8 NET rating looks impressive, but the resume is a little thin. The next 13 days could change that dramatically. Starting Thursday, the Irish play Louisville, Florida State, NC State and Duke -- all probable NCAA tournament teams. These are the games that will show the way if Notre Dame is to be a serious ACC contender and a potential first- and second-round NCAA host.

The bubble has remained relatively stagnant the last two weeks. Despite plenty of losing by the teams on the right side of the bubble -- Michigan on Wednesday and Tennessee and Vanderbilt on Thursday -- little movement into or out of the field has occurred. Normally a loss would drop them out, but not this time. Why? For one team to fall, another must take its place. Right now, those teams don't exist. Minnesota has lost five in a row. Maryland and Washington have each dropped four of five games. Atlantic 10 contenders Richmond and George Mason are a combined 0-4 against the NET top 50. Cal played USC tough on Sunday but hasn't won since Jan. 21. With so many of the SEC bubble teams taking turns knocking off each other, openings are there to sneak into the field. But to this point, no one is walking through.

WOMEN'S BRACKETOLOGY: 2024 NCAA TOURNAMENT​

Forget Super Sunday. We had Shakeup Sunday. Upsets and big performances created major changes within the top 16. Ohio State, winner of 11 wins in a row, is the newest No. 1 seed after its rout of Michigan State and Iowa's loss at Nebraska. Oregon State, the other big mover, is now in position to be a host school as a No. 4 seed. The Beavers went from No. 22 in the NET to No. 17 after a sweep at Utah and Colorado, the most impressive consecutive road wins of any team in the country this season. They are 4-0 against the mountain schools. With UCLA and USC visiting Corvallis this weekend, Oregon State is in position to lock down a top-four NCAA tournament seed. This after being the next-to-last at-large team in our preseason bracket and picked to finish 10th in the conference by the Pac-12 coaches.

Several games this week will impact the NCAA selection committee's reveal of its top 16 seeds Thursday and possibly even what happens on Selection Sunday. Texas will play at Oklahoma on Wednesday in what likely will decide the Big 12 regular-season championship and have major implications for whether the Longhorns can hold down the final No. 1 seed. Stanford can clinch the final Pac-12 title with a win at Oregon State on Thursday or at Oregon on Saturday. But the Cardinal's chances of locking up a top seed in the NCAA tournament might come down to what happens in Corvallis. Virginia Tech is a team that could steal a No. 1 seed from either Texas or Stanford, but the Hokies probably must prevail at Notre Dame on Thursday to do it.

Not only did Princeton win Ivy Madness on Saturday to ensure the Ivy League would remain a one-bid conference, the Tigers beat Columbia on the Lions' home floor. That, coupled with Middle Tennessee's Conference USA tournament win, ended all the bid stealing possibilities for the bubble teams.
