Wow. Building a BBS is a Great Way to Feel Stupid...

So. It's easy. You buy your domain name. You buy your web host. You download some board software. You upload it to your host. ...

How?

You use an FTP program.

Download FTP program (Smart FTP) and open it up.

Create a file on your host. ...

How?

 :bang:

As far as I can tell the fucking thing isn't fully connecting up.

I knew this would be a huge pain in the ass. It took me almost a day to get the host up because of some billing snafu, and now I'm having to learn not one but two new pieces of software in my "free" time. Free time? I should be working on my marketing plan or paying my bills or chasing girls instead of sitting in my room farting with this stupid computer.

I would have started with a free board, build a base, then use your money to buy a super special awesome forum that allows hacks and such.

Nevertheless, glad to see you opening a new place.

Yeah there's just one problem with that. No body gives a shit about some temporary half assed forum that won't make it though the month.

Also only whiny little cunts with obvious childhood toy issues care about pointless fluff like hacks.

What do you have Volpone CPanel and PHPBB?

I like to use filezilla FTP.

When you first get a site it takes a day or two for the domain name to populate DNS.

Well, I hesitate to speak badly of my host, but it's been one headache after another. First I got told that there was a problem with my registration and I needed to call them. Then after that got sorted out, I needed to re-pay the bill because they'd refunded my $$. But their billing system just showed a double-bill, with no refund, so it took a couple more calls to sort that out. Then, when that got sorted out, I never got my activation information and had to get in touch with them for that.

To be fair, they've been very responsive and very helpful, and this may be less a problem with their services and more a manifestation of my infamous bad Electronics Karma. :(

Seriously, I'm one of about 150 people that got the successor to the wildly successful Commodore 64, the Commodore Plus 4.

While it included some built-in software, that was about all the software ever made for it. Except Zork. And some Hulk game. Then when it broke immediately, my Mom exchanged it for another one instead of getting cash. :bang:

And our Atari was crap. And not learning from the Plus 4, I bought me the state-of-the-art, sexy Commodore Amiga. Great computer. But the company went bankrupt a couple years later.

And whenever I do something that works for other people, right out of the box, I invariably have all manner of weird gremlins and unforeseen problems.

Once I had problems with an ISDN line because unbeknownst to me the local switch was doing some hinky things with the configuration that was flaking out the distant end. Only through dumb luck did my boss manage to have a conversation at the right time that got overheard by the right person and we found out what was going on.

I thought the C64 successor was the c128? That one got me through college! And ran all the cool C64 games I'd "acquired" in high school.

So are you going to tell us the URL of your new board?

Just an update for y'all: It will be awhile before there is an update. My boss is out of town so I'm in charge. And he's got a heckuva lot more experience doing what he does than I do, so I have to work fairly hard to get that done. And on top of that I have MY job to do--and a bunch of big deliverables at the end of the month. AND I have to be out of the office all of next week. AND I've got some personal stuff for my sideline business venture coming up in the next few weeks.

So I'm pretty fucking busy. :( I guess I could get someone to set things up for me, but that doesn't seem right. I sorta want to start it myself.

Sometimes these sort of things take more time to arrange than you would have thought beforehand. :)

Oh, I knew it would suck. I knew it would be a pain in the ass. That's why I tried so hard to get things to where I was comfortable at Wordforge. Unfortunately that was an impossible task. But I'm still going to put my money where my mouth is. It may just take some time...

Because for anyone who says "Oh, why don't you just come on back. It isn't that bad." My reply is that if "not so bad", two sets of rules--one for the Inner Circle and one for the Unwashed Masses, and a website owner who ignores the members in favor of personal choices is the standard to settle for, fuck, I might as well just go to TBBS. Then I can see what Ptrope and MissThang are up to. I miss them.

If you're having this many problems, why not start off with a free board, then transfer to a new server once you've gotten a membership established? To me, it's not the gizmos and gadgets that make a board fun, but the posters. I'll bet the Old Guard of the 'Forge were far happier and content with the old Invision Free board with an owner that would listen to them than with theone we have now, with moderation that some are losing trust in.

My opinion probably doesn't carry much weigh, but that's just my view on things.

Also, talk with other board owners, like J. Allen. They may be able to help you get this sucker off the ground.

Good luck.
