XFL FOOTBALL

XFL assigns three new quarterbacks, including veteran who started in NFL during 2018
CeeJay - BLACKFOOT
Josh Johnson bounced around the NFL for 12 seasons and is now set for the next stage of his football journey. Johnson signed with the XFL and was assigned to the Los Angeles Wildcats for the 2020 season. Former Carolina Panthers quarterback Taylor Heinicke was assigned to the St. Louis Battlehawks and former Marshall quarterback Chase Litton was assigned to the Seattle Dragons.

Johnson a fifth-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft by the Tampa Buccaneers, Johnson has played for 13 NFL teams, including two different stints with the San Francisco 49ers and Cincinnati Bengals. He has also played for the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the defunct United Football League and was on the initial roster of the San Diego Fleet of the Alliance of American Football before signing with the Redskins. He has completed 55.2 percent of his passes for eight touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 33 career NFL games.

Heinicke went undrafted in the 2015 NFL Draft, signing with the Minnesota Vikings and was on their practice squad for a few years. he had a brief stint with the New England Patriots before signing with the Houston Texans in 2017, making his NFL debut and completing a pass. He played in six games for the Panthers in 2018, completing 61.4 percent of his passes for 320 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions and was released prior to the 2019 season. He'll compete with Jordan Ta'amu for the starting quarterback job.

Litton ranked fifth in school history in career passing yards (8,332) and fourth in career passing touchdowns (72) at Marshall. He has never taken an NFL snap after having practice squad stints with the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars. He'll compete with Brandon Silvers for the starting quarterback job.

XFL releases complete 2020 schedule for all eight teams, to begin immediately following Super Bowl 54
CeeJay - BLACKFOOT
Football doesn't have to end when the NFL wraps up after the Super Bowl this season, or at least that's what the XFL wants you to buy into. The startup league will look for a mulligan this time around when it reboots its previously failed venture in 2020, and only one year after seeing the Alliance of American Football implode in spectacularly depressing fashion. Vince McMahon, billionaire maestro of the WWE and creator of the XFL, hopes joining forces with XFL commissioner and league CEO Oliver Luck will help to avoid the pitfalls that doomed the developmental pro league nearly two decades ago. By the looks of it, the XFL will average two games per day playing on both Saturdays and Sundays, with the playoffs set to begin in mid-April. And so it goes, the XFL is "back for the first time" on Saturday, Feb. 8.

XFL team executive says he won't sign Johnny Manziel because of chemistry concerns
johnny Manziel has expressed interest in playing in the XFL, which returns in February after an 18-year hiatus, but at least one of the revived league's team executives has no interest in giving him that chance. Former Dallas Cowboys star Daryl Johnston, who now serves as director of player personnel for the upstart Dallas Renegades, said that he wouldn't even consider signing Manziel ahead of the 2020 season.

"I passed on him in San Antonio, and I'd pass on him again here," Johnston said, referencing his stint as a general manager in this year's short-lived Alliance of American Football. "For me, the chemistry in the locker room is critical, and especially (at) the quarterback position.

Johnston's concerns with Manziel date back to when the quarterback was still in the NFL, he said back in 2016 he didn't want Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to sign Manziel and inherit the quarterback's "poor choices." But Johnston's words still mark perhaps the harshest assessment of "Johnny Football" in recent memory, especially considering Manziel has since admitted to many of the off-field mistakes that helped derail his Cleveland Browns career.

XFL reveals game balls, which will be unique to each team in the league
The highly anticipated XFL football have finally arrived. The league revealed their game balls on Monday. When wrestling promoter Vince McMahon decided to bring back the XFL two years ago, he did so with a vision of changing things up a bit, and that includes the game ball. They are not trying to fix the game, just alter a few elements and rebrand it as "football reimagined." There are Xs on the ends of the football that, according to the league, will allow the receivers to see the ball easier and will make spirals look cinematic as they soar through the air. Another thing that sets the football apart is the overall texture. The ball has interlocking Xs which they are calling "X-Pebble grip technology" rather than the normal feel.

Los Angeles XFL player drops out of league because he felt misled about salary
The XFL just had it's first draft, but there are already issues when it comes to how much the players will get paid to play in the league. Corey Vereen, a former Tennessee Volunteers defensive end who was drafted by the Los Angeles Wildcats last week, is stepping away from the team after saying the XFL salary is not what he was expecting. Vereen feels misled after the league reportedly said the average annual salary for a player was $55,000 per year when in reality what he was taking home was well below that mark. Logan Brown Sports, which represents Vereen, released a statement saying the actual base salaries in the league are $27,040 per year.

The most notable names on XFL rosters

So the XFL is set to give it another go. The action kicks off next month, and we'll see if the league can make it through a full season — something the recent Alliance of American Football was unable to accomplishment. With the XFL come some player names that might sound familiar, either from their days in college and/or the NFL. Here's a look at some of the more notable players trying to prolong their pro football careers in the XFL, or at least until the rosters become official on Jan. 27.

Tim Tebow spurns XFL overture to focus on making majors with Mets

Be it on a Triple-A field in Syracuse or a tennis court in South Asia, Tim Tebow is still working, hoping for a shot at the majors. Now 32, the former celebrated quarterback is back for his fifth year as a minor league outfielder for the New York Mets. A two-time national champion at Florida who won the Heisman Trophy and later a playoff-winning QB for the Denver Broncos, Tebow was contacted by the XFL in its return to football action this season. He said he loves the opportunity the league is giving to players who will eventually, he feels, make an NFL roster. Tebow hit .163 with four home runs and 19 RBI in 77 games last year in his first Triple-A action.

Retired NFL star Chad Johnson trying out for XFL as kicker
Johnson, 42, last played in an NFL game in February 2012, catching one pass for the New England Patriots during a Super Bowl XLVI loss. He was named to six Pro Bowls as a receiver, but often expressed sincere interest in kicking. In fact, he converted an extra point and kicked off for the Cincinnati during the 2009 preseason.

Sources: Former NFL receiver Chad Johnson skips scheduled XFL tryout

Retired NFL receiver Chad Johnson did not participate in a tryout Monday with the XFL as scheduled, according to multiple people familiar with the situation. Johnson, 42, announced last week on Twitter that he would work out as a place-kicker with the new league. A source confirmed that Johnson was set to be evaluated alongside a number of other potential kickers as the XFL wrapped up its first training camp. Johnson was a six-time Pro Bowl player in the NFL and has often expressed sincere interest in kicking. In fact, he converted an extra point and kicked off for the Cincinnati Bengals during the 2009 preseason. Last month, he posted a video on Instagram in which he converted what he wrote was a 60-yard field goal.
